Teen Driver Safety

It is important to discuss safe driving habits with teens every day, but Teen Driver Safety Week serves as a great opportunity for parents and guardians to have a conversation with teens about safe driving habits. Teen drivers need to know the Rules of the Road before adults hand over the keys. Ultimately, it’s parents who are in control.

Facts
·Traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in the United States.
·In 2024, a total of 2,320 people were killed in traffic crashes that involved a teen (15-18 years old) driver, and 752 of those killed were the teen driver.
·Of the 2,320 people killed in crashes involving a teen (15-18 years old) driver, 752 were teen drivers, and 478 were the teen driver’s passengers.
·Of those teen passengers killed while riding with another teen driver, 61% were male, and 39% were female.
·In 2024, there were 85,947 teen (15-18 years old) drivers injured in traffic crashes.

Parents play a critical role in teaching teen drivers safe driving habits. Let’s remind parents that it’s their responsibility to help teen drivers make smart choices to stay safe on the road. Teens need to understand the rules and the deadly consequences that could occur. Surveys show that teens whose parents set firm rules for driving typically engaged in less risky driving behaviors and were involved in fewer crashes.

A school bus with its stop-arm out and flashing lights means STOP — kids are crossing!

No matter where you’re headed, the rule is the same: when the stop-arm is out, you stop. 🛑

It’s easy: If the school bus stops, you need to stop, too!

Here’s a little school bus refresher:
🟡 Yellow means slow.
🛑 Red means stop.
Let’s protect kids getting on and off the school bus! Always stop when the stop-arm is out.

Stopping for school buses is the law in all 50 states. Following it protects young lives. Always stop when the stop-arm is out.

As communities nationwide prepare for Halloween celebrations, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) remind all drivers that Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving. Drivers should act responsibly and commit to sober driving to keep themselves, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users safe. This Halloween, let’s make happy memories, not tragic nightmares. The only thing scarier than zombies and witches on the streets is an impaired driver.

Scary Facts👻👻👻

From 2019 to 2024, on Halloween night (6 pm, Oct 31 - 5:59 am, Nov 1):

🎃201 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes, which involve at least one driver who had a blood alcohol level of .01 or higher.
🎃176 people were killed in crashes that involved a drunk driver with a BAC of .08 or higher.
🎃More than half (54%) of the traffic collision fatalities among 21–34-year-olds during this 5-year period were the result of impaired driving-related collisions.
🎃Victims in these drunk-driving collisions included 31 pedestrians and 144 drivers and passengers.

Last Saturday, members of the Community Action Team as well as SRO Sgt. Chavous attended Unity Fest in Aiken. Officers were able to set up a mini obstacle course for the kids to enjoy and hand out a prize upon completion. K-9 Blaze got to play ball with a lot of different people as well, which she was very excited about. We enjoyed seeing everyone and hope to be back next year.
