I have had the opportunity to learn so much about public service from being at Mayor Sacco’s side for so many years, and his selfless decision to step aside now is just the latest example of him putting the community first and doing what is best for North Bergen.
I’m grateful to have the support of Mayor Sacco and my fellow Commissioners as I prepare to follow in his footsteps, and I’m incredibly excited for this next chapter. I look forward to working with Governor Mikie Sherrill, our state legislators, county leaders and neighboring mayors to build on the progress we’ve made and create an even brighter future for North Bergen. This community means everything to me, and I promise to work hard each and every day to make North Bergen more affordable, solve problems, help people and carry on the legacy of public service that Mayor Sacco has exemplified throughout his career.
For the past 35 years, it has been my great honor and privilege to serve as Mayor of North Bergen. When I first took office, I could never have imagined the journey we would take together or how much our community would grow and change. North Bergen has always been a special place, but together we have worked to make it an even better place to live, work, raise a family, and build a future. We have invested in our schools, parks, infrastructure, public safety, and municipal services, and I am incredibly proud of all we have accomplished together.
I will be stepping down as Mayor, and I am proud to announce that Hugo Cabrera will serve as the next Mayor of North Bergen. Hugo will serve as Mayor for the remainder of our current term. On May 11, the residents of North Bergen will have the opportunity to elect their next Mayor, and I am confident that they will elect Hugo and our team to continue the work we have done and build an even better future for our residents.
I have great confidence in Hugo and know he will work to continue the progress we have made and keep North Bergen moving forward. I know he shares our commitment to making North Bergen a community where people feel safe, families want to raise their children, and everyone can be proud to call home.
Thank you to the residents of North Bergen for your trust and support throughout these 35 years. Serving as your Mayor has truly been the privilege of a lifetime, and I look forward to seeing North Bergen continue to grow and thrive in the years ahead.
