Just another day at Emergency Management! πŸ˜‚

Director Pierce walked into a meeting to find his team taking Earthquake Preparedness Week VERY seriously.

His only feedback? β€œWe’re not currently having an earthquake… but I love the preparedness!”

Drop. Cover. Hold On. Even when the boss isn’t expecting it! 🌎

πŸŽƒ We prepare for hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes and severe weather.

A pumpkin takeover on Coleman Boulevard? That's a new one.

We're glad everyone is okay after today's unexpected pumpkin patch in Mount Pleasant!

We'll be adding this one to the preparedness plan. πŸŽƒ

Hurricane preparedness is a year-round effort! πŸŒ€

Our team recently met with Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community to talk about hurricane preparedness and how we can work together before, during, and after a storm.

These conversations help us stay connected, share information, and better prepare for whatever hurricane season may bring.

Thank you to Bishop Gadsden for taking the time to meet with us!

🌎 Did you know earthquakes can happen right here in the Lowcountry?

When you think of natural disasters in South Carolina, hurricanes and flooding probably come to mind first. But earthquakes are also a part of our history, and it's important to know what to do when the ground starts shaking.

Unlike hurricanes, earthquakes can happen without warning. That's why preparation is key!

If you feel shaking, remember these three steps:

πŸ”Ή DROP to your hands and knees.

πŸ”Ή COVER your head and neck. If possible, get under a sturdy table or desk.

πŸ”Ή HOLD ON until the shaking stops.

Take time to identify safe places in your home, workplace, and other places you frequently visit.

πŸ“ Remember, in South Carolina, it's ALWAYS earthquake season!

πŸŒͺ️ A Tornado Watch has been issued for parts of Georgia and South Carolina until 8 PM EDT.

What does this mean for you?

A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop in and near your area. Now is the time to stay alert and be prepared!

πŸ”Ή Monitor weather updates throughout the day.
πŸ”Ή Identify a safe place indoors, away from windows.
πŸ”Ή Be ready to take shelter if a warning is issued.

🚨 Remember: A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been indicated by radar or reported. Take shelter immediately!

Flooding is possible today. Stay alert and be prepared.

As rain continues to move through our area, be aware of changing conditions and the potential for flooding. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and know what actions to take if flooding impacts your area.

🚧 Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Never drive through floodwater or around barricades. Flooded roads can be deeper than they appear, and driving through them puts you, your passengers, and first responders at risk.

🌊 Floodwater can hide open storm drains, sharp debris, and other dangerous hazards. As tempting as it may look, flooded streets are not the place to splash around!

According to US National Weather Service Charleston SC, hazardous conditions are expected to develop tonight and continue through the weekend. The primary threats include heavy rainfall (3-6 inches possible through Sunday) and high tides, which are expected to produce flash flooding and coastal flooding in parts of the county.

Tornado advisories are possible tomorrow morning, particularly along the coast.

Based on this forecast and the potential for conditions to worsen quickly, county officials are encouraging residents to avoid all unnecessary travel Saturday.

In anticipation of weekend flooding, Charleston County will open the following parking garages at 6 p.m. tonight for residents in low-lying areas to park their cars for free for the duration of the storm:

β€’ 90 Cumberland Street
β€’ 85 Queen Street

To avoid being charged, residents must remove their vehicles by 4 p.m. Sunday.

🌧️ A rainy weekend is ahead, and coastal flooding is a concern.

Widespread rainfall is expected to develop Friday night into early Saturday, with the heaviest rainfall possible Saturday. Rain may continue through Sunday.

With higher-than-normal high tides expected this weekend, heavy rainfall occurring around high tide could lead to rapid coastal flooding in Charleston and other coastal areas.

Here's how to prepare:

🌧️ Allow extra time for travel and stay alert to changing conditions.
πŸš— Never drive through flooded roads.
🌊 Be especially cautious in areas prone to tidal or street flooding.
πŸ“± Monitor local weather updates and sign up for CHS Alerts to receive emergency notifications.
