The Lowcountry Land Trust and Sea Island Habitat for Humanity announced a partnership that will conserve 97 acres of the Johns Island Humbert Woods property as a new nature preserve while dedicating 5 acres for affordable housing next to the Sweetgrass Preserve neighborhood.
This innovative project protects vital forests and wetlands, supports wildlife, and strengthens the rural character of Johns Island—while also creating new opportunities for families to live and thrive in the community. Charleston County Council Chairman Joe Boykin attended and spoke at the event.
Charleston County’s Greenbelt Program is among the partners helping make this land conservation and milestone possible. To date, the Charleston County Greenbelt Program has helped preserved 28,855 acres of land in Charleston County. For more information, visit greenbelt.charlestoncounty.org

Greenbelt staff were glad to attend the 2026 Sea Islands Resilience Summit, joining conservation partners, community leaders, and regional experts to discuss the environmental challenges and opportunities facing Johns, Kiawah, and Seabrook Islands.
The summit highlighted community-driven priorities, land-use planning, water quality strategies, and the evolving regulatory landscape around wetland protection. Through panel discussions and collaborative dialogue, participants shared knowledge, identified emerging issues, and explored science-based solutions to support the long-term resilience of the Sea Islands’ land, water, wildlife, and communities.
We're grateful to all the speakers and partners who are working together to build a stronger, more resilient future for the Sea Islands.

James Island just gained a beautiful new public park!
Fort Pemberton Park — an 8.7-acre waterfront treasure with stunning sunset views over the Stono River — is officially open today following its ribbon cutting celebration.
Jason Kronsberg, Charleston Parks Conservancy Executive Director and Greenbelt Advisory Board member, spoke about the park’s opening and the many benefits it brings to the community. Charleston County Councilman Brantley Moody also joined city and park officials to mark the special occasion.
Park features include:
• A fishing dock
• Kayak launch
• Picnic shelter
• Restroom
• Half-mile walking path
• Parking area and ADA parking
While the upgrades are exciting, the natural beauty and historic character of the site truly make it one-of-a-kind. Originally built in 1861–62 as a Civil War earthwork fort, Fort Pemberton once mounted 20 guns to protect Wappoo Creek and the Stono River. After decades as farmland and private residential property, the City of Charleston purchased it in 2019 with funding from the county’s Greenbelt Program, transforming it into a public green space for all to enjoy.
Come explore Charleston’s newest park at 221 Yates Ave and take in the history, nature, and incredible views. 🌅💚
