Navy Wounded Warrior came to Great Lakes last week for an adaptive sports intro camp. Adaptive athletics and reconditioning activities have been modified to meet the abilities of injured or ill individuals so that everyone can participate together. All Sailors and Coast Guardsmen enrolled in Navy Wounded Warrior are encouraged to include adaptive athletics in their recovery plans to rebuild strength and endurance. Sports also help with goal setting, building self-esteem, and lowering stress levels.

Naval Station Great Lakes and tenant commands leadership played against some of the participants in the Navy Wounded Warrior adaptive sports intro camp. They learned how to play sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and practiced rowing. The adaptive sports and recreation program promotes the mental and physical well-being of wounded, ill, and injured service members as part of a larger continuum of care that service members receive through Navy Wounded Warrior.

Each Thanksgiving, local families open their homes to Sailors who are unable to travel home for the holiday. Your generosity provides these young men and women with a welcoming environment, a home-cooked meal, and the opportunity to experience the warmth of the local community while stationed away from their own families.

To streamline the registration process and ensure every interested family has an opportunity to participate, we have transitioned to an electronic registration process.

The Great Lakes Adopt-a-Sailor Program will take place on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026.
