ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS!!!

As we come to the end of Fire Prevention Month, Crescent Hose Company would like to highlight an important tool that helps firefighters gain quick, secure access to commercial properties during emergencies: the Knox Box.

A Knox Box is a secure key box mounted on the exterior of a business or other building. It allows authorized fire department personnel to gain non-destructive access during emergencies when doors may be locked and no one is available to let crews inside.

That faster access can help firefighters investigate alarms, reach sprinkler or fire alarm systems, locate utility controls, and begin emergency operations without having to force entry and potentially cause unnecessary damage.

Knox Boxes are especially valuable for businesses, apartment complexes, schools, churches, and other properties that may be unoccupied when an alarm occurs.

They can also be a worthwhile investment. A Knox Box can cost as little as around $200, while replacing a damaged commercial door after forced entry can easily cost more than $1000. In many cases, providing firefighters with secure emergency access can help save both time and unnecessary repair costs.

Fire prevention is about more than stopping fires before they start. It’s also about making sure responders have the tools and access they need when every second counts.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

As temperatures begin to drop and furnaces, fireplaces, and other heating equipment start getting used more often, Crescent Hose Company would like to remind everyone about the dangers of carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can build up inside a home without warning. A working CO alarm is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family.

A few simple safety reminders:

Test your carbon monoxide alarms regularly and replace batteries when needed.

Have furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and other fuel-burning appliances inspected and maintained.

Never let a vehicle run inside an attached garage, even with the garage door open.

Never operate generators, grills, or other fuel-powered equipment inside a home, garage, or enclosed space.

Make sure vents and exhaust systems remain clear and unobstructed.

If your CO alarm sounds, leave the building immediately, move to fresh air, and call 911.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure can include headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, and fatigue. If multiple people in the home begin experiencing similar symptoms, take it seriously.

A few minutes spent checking your alarms and heating equipment could make all the difference this fall and winter.

As cooler weather settles into North East, many families are turning furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and space heaters back on for the season. October is a great time to make sure your home is ready.

A few simple steps can make a huge difference:

Have furnaces, chimneys, fireplaces, and wood stoves inspected and cleaned as needed.

Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace batteries if necessary.

Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.

Make sure everyone in your home knows two ways out and has a designated meeting place outside.

Avoid overloading extension cords and outlets, and never use damaged electrical cords.

Never leave cooking unattended, especially with the busy fall and holiday season approaching.

Close before you doze. A closed bedroom door can help slow the spread of heat, smoke, and fire while you sleep.

Take a few minutes this month to check around your home, talk with your family about your escape plan, and make sure everyone knows what to do if an alarm sounds.

A little preparation today can make all the difference when seconds count.

Overnight Mass Casualty Response – Interstate 90

Shortly after midnight, Crescent and Fuller Hose Company #1 were dispatched to Interstate 90 for a reported motor vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer and commercial bus.

1st Assistant Chief 201 arrived on scene and established Incident Command, with 2nd Assistant Chief 211 overseeing triage operations and Rescue Chief 210 directing rescue operations.

Engine 204 and Rescue 208 arrived to find two patients still confined within the bus due to their injuries. Crews from both companies worked together to safely remove the patients. Ambulance 217 arrived at the same time and began evaluating the large number of occupants involved.

With more than 30 patients requiring assessment, personnel from numerous agencies worked together to establish an organized triage operation, evaluate those involved, and coordinate transportation as needed. Ultimately, seven patients were transported to area hospitals.

Resources from the North East School District were also utilized to safely remove all remaining affected occupants from the interstate and transport them away from the crash scene.

A response of this size requires much more than fire and EMS resources. PA State Police, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), New York State Department of Transportation, North East School District, Czarnecki Towing Services, HAAS Alert, and local emergency management all assisted with various aspects of the incident.

We are extremely thankful for the cooperation and teamwork shown by every agency involved. Large scale incidents like this require everyone to work from the same playbook, and that coordination helped crews safely manage a complex scene in the early morning hours.
