Several members of Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nury Martinez’s staff have been issued subpoenas by the U.S. attorney’s office to appear before a grand jury.

The subpoenas were issued over the last few weeks, with staffers asked to testify with respect to Martinez’s 2015 re-election campaign, Martinez’s political consultant Roy Behr confirmed.

“The councilwoman has not been subpoenaed, and she understands from the U.S. attorney’s office that she is not a target of the inquiry,” Behr wrote in a statement. “We are unaware whether there is a particular target. The councilwoman intends to cooperate fully.”

While Behr declined to name the staffers called to testify, he said Martinez’s top aide, Jim Dantona, isn’t part of the group.

A longtime City Hall staffer, Dantona is running for the 27th state Senate District seat.

U.S. attorney’s office spokesman Thom Mrozek declined to comment on or confirm the grand jury investigation.

A grand jury is used to determine whether probable cause exists to believe a crime has been committed. If cause is determined, an indictment is issued.

A one-time member of the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, Martinez easily beat challenger Cindy Montanez in the March election, allowing the councilwoman to retain her San Fernando Valley seat.

The two women also faced off in a 2013 special election.

In office just 18 months at the time of the March race, Martinez campaigned on her efforts to eliminate prostitution and illegal dumping in District 6, which stretches from Lake Balboa to Sun Valley.

The councilwoman raised $289,000 during the race, more than three times the amount collected by Montanez.

Outside groups spent more than $245,000 on behalf of the councilwoman.

The subpoenas to Martinez’s staff come several months after an aide to U.S. Rep. Tony Cardenas of the San Fernando Valley was called to testify before a grand jury, reportedly about campaign issues.

It’s unclear if the two investigations are related.

In April, Gabriela Marquez, district director of Cardenas’ Panorama City office, notified the U.S. House of Representatives in April that she had received a grand jury subpoena.

Cardenas and Martinez are part of a group of San Fernando Valley politicians who have relied on each other for campaign help during their respective elections.

The group has at times also included Los Angeles City Councilman Felipe Fuentes and former Assemblyman Raul Bocanegra."
