Active shooter response training is one of the most important investments a school district can make. Today, the North Little Rock School District demonstrated just how seriously they take the safety of their students and staff through their Commissioned School Security Officer (CSSO) program.

Last year, we focused on team movement and coordinated response. Within a month of that training, those skills were put to the test when a shooting occurred at a football game. Their training helped prepare them to respond under pressure.

This year, our focus shifted to the individual officer response because time matters. Officers may have to act alone before additional help arrives. Today's hands-on training placed them in realistic, high-stress scenarios involving live gunfire, multiple suspects, mass chaos, and critical shoot/don't shoot decision-making. The goal was to provide the tools, understanding, and confidence needed to respond effectively when every second counts.

The North Little Rock School District should be proud of these dedicated professionals. Their commitment to continuous training and preparedness reflects their unwavering dedication to protecting the students, staff, and community they serve.

Active shooter and active threat response is one of the most critical components of the Arkansas Commissioned School Security Officer (CSSO) program. Every day, Commissioned School Security Officers and security teams stand ready to protect students and staff across Arkansas schools.

Today, we had the privilege of training 20 dedicated school security professionals in Central Arkansas as part of their annual training requirements. This was not PowerPoint-based instruction—it was hands-on, reality-based training designed to build the skills, confidence, and mindset needed to respond effectively during an active threat.

Today's individual officer response training emphasized the importance of speed, decisiveness, and moving toward the threat to engage and stop it based on the circumstances presented. These critical skills can make all the difference when lives are at stake.

With more than 50 years of combined law enforcement experience, Robert Maack and Les Munn are proud to share the knowledge and practical techniques they've gained throughout their careers. It is an honor to provide this level of training to the dedicated security teams protecting Arkansas schools.
