A busy but highly productive day at the Capitol yesterday for our September legislative interim meetings!
I started the morning in the Transportation Interim Committee addressing critical infrastructure and public safety updates. We reviewed a presentation on traffic safety data, discussed non-domiciled commercial driver licenses , and evaluated options for a personal electric vehicle safety course. We also spent time diving into the State Tax Commission's updates on novel vehicles and seasonal vehicle registration requirements, alongside draft legislation on off-highway vehicle modifications. We will likely move forward with plans to end Utah’s non-domiciled commercial drivers license program.
In the afternoon, I participated in the Government Operations Interim Committee. Our agenda focused heavily on oversight and transparency, featuring presentations on election costs, the state’s Voter Registration Citizenship Review, and a critical update from Utah's Chief Privacy Officer regarding how state agencies handle personal data.
Today is the Federalism Commission. We’ll hear from the Department of Environmental Quality on efforts relating to state jurisdiction in air quality, water quality, drinking water, and the environment. We’ll also discuss the work of the law enforcement workgroup relating to state and federal jurisdiction on law enforcement issues, the Eisenhower jurisdiction study findings, and much more
Interim days like yesterday are where the heavy lifting happens—analyzing data, hearing expert findings, and building a responsible legislative framework for the 2027 session.
