NEW BICYCLE & E-BIKE ORDINANCE (Ordinance No. 4258)

Hey North Platte riders! To keep our streets and sidewalks safe and enjoyable for everyone, the City Council has updated our local rules for bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, and hoverboards. These new updates officially take effect on September 30, 2026.

Whether you’re commuting to work or out for a fun weekend cruise, here are a few important things to keep in mind before you head out:

🚦 Follow traffic laws
Bicycles, e-bikes, hoverboards, and lightweight e-scooters using roadways must follow applicable traffic laws and obey traffic control devices, including stop signs.

🚢 Yield to pedestrians and vehicles
When riding on a sidewalk, hike-and-bike trail, or other pedestrian walkway, riders must yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal before passing. Riders approaching a sidewalk from an alley, driveway, or building must yield to pedestrians, and when entering a roadway, must yield to vehicles approaching on the roadway.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Parents & guardians have a responsibility
Parents or guardians of children under 16 may not authorize or knowingly permit a child to violate the provisions of the ordinance.

🚫 PROHIBITED USES
Speed restrictions for e-scooters and hoverboards
Lightweight e-scooters and hoverboards may not be ridden on roadways within the City where the posted speed limit is greater than 25 MPH. They may cross these roadways at a marked intersection while following posted signs, warnings, and applicable laws.

Carrying passengers-A person may not operate a bicycle, skateboard, e-bike, hoverboard, scooter, or lightweight e-scooter while carrying another person, and no person may ride as a passenger on these devices on a public street, sidewalk, alley, or path unless the device was specifically manufactured with a designated passenger seat or structural accommodations for more than one person.

πŸ›‘ Do not attach to moving vehicles
It is unlawful to attach yourself or a bicycle, e-bike, lightweight e-scooter, or hoverboard to a vehicle on a street, or hitch onto or cling to a vehicle that is in motion.

πŸ’‘ Lights are required at night
Bicycles and covered electric devices traveling on streets from Β½ hour after sunset to Β½ hour before sunrise must have the required front light and rear reflector.

πŸ›€οΈ Hike-and-bike trails
E-bikes, e-scooters, and hoverboards may be operated on hike-and-bike trails unless prohibited by posted signage. Riders must operate at a safe and reasonable speed and may not exceed 25 MPH or the posted speed limit for the bordering street, whichever is lower.

πŸ™οΈ Central Business District sidewalks
Bicycles, e-bikes, skateboards, hoverboards, and lightweight e-scooters may not be ridden on sidewalks within the Central Business District. When riding on other permitted sidewalks, riders must yield to pedestrians.

πŸ‘‰ The goal is simple: Share the road, follow the rules, yield to others, and ride safely.

The North Platte Police Department encourages everyone using bicycles and electric devices to become familiar with the updated ordinance before it takes effect.

🚲 Ride safe. Follow the rules. Look out for one another.
