Author of the Month – Thomas Wartenberg
Tuesday, October 13
1:00 to 2:00 pm

Tom Wartenberg works at the interface between philosophy and popular culture. His writing on film spans both reviews of popular films—as evidenced by the reviews he has published in Philosophy Now—and lengthier essays that he has published in a variety of anthologies and journals. Thoughtful Cinema: Illustrating Philosophy on Film is the culmination of his writing about film. It contains chapters on such films as The Zone of Interest and The Power of the Dog, pairing each film with a philosophical theory it illustrates, such as Hannah Arendt’s theory of the banality of evil and Judith Thomson’s account of third-party protective killings. In addition to writing on films, Tom has published books in the fields of philosophy for children, Existentialism, and philosophical aesthetics. He is the recipient of three Fulbright Fellowships and an NEH Fellowship for College Teachers. He was awarded the 2011 APA/PDC Prize for Excellence and Innovations in Philosophy Programs and the 2013 Merritt Prize for his contributions to the philosophy of education. His philosophy for children program is featured in the Emmy Award winning WGBY documentary, Big Ideas for Little Kids. When he is not writing, he enjoys playing the flute, kayaking, and pickleball.

Journaling with Joy
Friday, October 9
9:00 to 11:30 am
Limited to 10 participants

Journaling with Joy is a creative, hands-on workshop that blends the healing power of gratitude with playful self-expression. Maintaining a regular gratitude practice can reduce symptoms of depression, decrease feelings of stress and anxiety, contribute to overall well-being and happiness, and it’s also just plain fun!

In this workshop, we will journal not just with words, but also with images, photos, stickers, doodles, colored paper, inspiring quotes, and more. Just bring a special-to-you lined or unlined notebook or purchase one at the start of class from a selection that will be provided by the facilitator, Sharon. She will also be providing the rest of the materials!
