I toured the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s facilities to see firsthand how critical infrastructure protects our region.

The Stickney Water Reclamation Plant can treat up to 1.44 billion gallons of wastewater per day and serves about 2.2 million people. The Deep Tunnel helps manage stormwater and sewer overflows across a 375-square-mile area, while the McCook Reservoir can hold 3.5 billion gallons to help prevent flooding and protect our waterways.

This infrastructure plays a critical role in protecting the water and communities we rely on every day.

Riverwoods Residents Association’s Arts & Riverwoods brought together talented local painters, sculptors, photographers, and artisans. The Association, which predates the village, has supported social and charitable causes since 1955. While the art fair has moved from its original locations in residents’ homes to the beautiful village boardroom, it remains a wonderful place to connect with artists and neighbors. On this third anniversary of October 7th, as I mourn the 1,200 people killed in southern Israel, these two images from my visit to Kibbutz Nir Oz, one of the hardest hit, come to mind. First, the Yahrzeit candles lit to honor and remember the souls of the dead in Jewish tradition. Second, in the same home, a bird perched in a ray of light, symbols of hope and peace. May all who mourn today seek light, peace, and co-existence in a better future.
