Warm weather ≠ watering season (at least not for your lawn yet!)
Spring is knocking on the door in Northglenn, but don't let the warm forecast fool you into reaching for that garden hose just yet!
Here's what's actually happening in your yard right now:
Your grass is taking a long winter nap. Brown turf doesn't mean dead turf, Kentucky bluegrass is simply resting underground, storing energy for a big spring comeback. So, your sprinkler system can stay off for now.
Your trees and shrubs are a different story though. Without regular snowfall to recharge the soil, they can quietly suffer through dry stretches, especially younger or newly planted ones.
The rule of thumb? If Northglenn hasn't seen meaningful precipitation in about 3 weeks, grab a hose.
A few tips to keep your trees and shrubs healthy:
🌿 Pick a mild day, 40°F or above and ground isn't frozen
🌿 Water midday so it soaks in before overnight temps drop
🌿 Give trees about 10 gallons for every inch of trunk width
🌿 Shrubs typically need somewhere between 5 and 18 gallons
🌿 Always disconnect and drain your hose when you're done!
A little attention now goes a long way toward a greener, healthier yard this spring.

Strong winds are toppling trees throughout Northglenn.
Residents are advised to stay indoors, keep their pets inside, and avoid driving until the wind calms down.
City crews will be working to ensure streets are passable for motorists, starting with the major thoroughfares before moving to residential roads. If you come across a tree in a city street, please report it immediately to 303.288.1535.
For residents with damaged trees, they may bring branches and tree stumps to the City’s Maintenance & Operations Facility, 12301 Claude Court, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, and Saturday, Dec. 20. Please bring proof of residency such as a driver’s license or utility bill.
The City appreciates everyone’s patience and caution during this situation.
