The Cookie Gant Spirit Award is an annual honor established by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) State Recipient Rights Committee to recognize individuals who show exceptional tenacity and dedication in advocating for people with mental illness and developmental disabilities.

Lynette was given this award on September 17 at the 33rd Annual Recipient Rights Conference. MDHHS has been awarding the Cookie Gant Spirit Award since 2003. The Lakeshore Regional Entity is proud to recognize Lynette Bilski on being awarded the Cookie Gant Spirit Award for 2026.

From Lynette...."I started my advocacy about 25 years ago. All of my immediate family live with severe and persistent mental illness and I knew I had to help. My goal was to make sure my family's needs were met, but in order to do that I knew I needed to get involved. I decided to sit on committees that were geared to improving the public mental health system and protecting the rights that people have while they are in services. One of the committees is recipient rights and I get to see the legal side to how the public mental health system runs. Working as an advocate has helped me too. It gave me purpose. I have met so many wonderful people and I feel my life is complete now. The number one thing I have learned as an advocate is that advocacy is really just about doing the right thing. Thats really what it's about, and I strive everyday to do that...."
