If you have dark spots creeping up your shower wall or notice a musty odor when you enter the basement, there's a good chance that mold or mildew has decided to set up shop in your home.

But which ick is which? Here's how to identify the gunk in your house:

🦠 Mold
Mold is a type of fungus that needs moisture and oxygen to grow. Mold produces spores that float through the air. When spores settle on a moist surface, they start to eat away at it to grow and spread. Certain types of mold — like black mold — are considered “toxic” and can have serious health effects.

🍄 Mildew
Mildew is also a fungus that thrives in moist, humid environments. The two most common types are downy and powdery mildew. Both grow on flat surfaces like shower walls, basement floors and windowsills.

👯 What’s the Difference?
Typically, mold is dark or very colorful, and it has a strong, telltale odor. It might be fuzzy or appear as multiple round specks or dots. Mildew is gray or light brown, and it smells musty or sour. The texture is usually more powdery than mold.

Mold grows into materials like wood and drywall, while mildew sits on top of flat surfaces. However, it’s important to note that both can cause structural damage if left untreated.

This upcoming winter, forecasters are tracking a Super El Niño that's shaping up to be one of the strongest on record. You may have heard this news, but what does it mean for you — and for your home?

El Niño isn't a storm or a season. It's a pattern of warming in the Pacific Ocean that happens every few years. It changes how weather behaves across the entire continent. Some regions see significantly heavier rain and higher flood risk, while others experience milder temperatures and less precipitation than normal. The Southern half of the country typically gets the worst of the storms, but El Niño can also bring heavy snow to the Northeast.

The natural question is: If this is just weather, why prepare now? The answer comes down to uncertainty. No one knows what this winter is shaping up to be. With this season's outlook seeming different from anything in recorded history, you’ll want to batten down the hatches like never before.

Preparation Matters: Your Super El Niño Home Prep Checklist

🏠 Inspect your roof for damaged or missing shingles. Now’s the time to schedule repairs, if needed. After all of the leaves are off the trees, clean the gunk out of your gutters.

💧 Think about flood management. In your basement, seal leaks and test your sump pump. Outside, make sure your yard slopes away from your foundation. You may want to invest in sandbags or flood barriers.

🌳 Trim dead branches — especially those that hang over your roof or near windows.

📃 Take a home inventory. Save photos of valuable items and appliances, and note their serial numbers. Store this information digitally so that you can access it anywhere.

⛑️ Assemble an emergency kit. Make sure you have flashlights, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food and medications.
