We've been keeping an eye on the weather, and wanted to update everyone on the status of our Fall Festival happening tomorrow from 3-6pm--the event will now be taking place INDOORS!

Unfortunately, this means the Hovick Family Petting Zoo will no longer be visiting us at the library :( We hope to have them back again for next year's festival!

We will still have lots of fall themed crafts, stories, snacks, and our favorite furry friend Scribbles at the event tomorrow! The HIRTA shuttle will still be running during the event, and will be picking up from the north lot of the high school near handicapped parking. We can't wait to see everyone tomorrow afternoon!

Our Staff Inservice Day this past Monday was a huge success! For only the second time this year, our whole staff was able to gather for essential trainings and project work while the library was closed.

We started off our morning with donated bakery goods from Mmmm. Sourdough, including delicious pumpkin spice donuts that were a complete hit with our staff!

Next, we had Heather Soyer, PsyD from Magnolia Connection stop in to give our staff training on neurodiversity and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Staff learned how to work with neurodiverse individuals and provide essential support for these patrons, helping us grow to better serve everyone in our community!

Our IT Department Head, Tim Geyer, from the City of Norwalk, Iowa - City Hall also stopped in to help our staff with new technology and security training. Shortly after, we had lunch, which was delicious pizza provided by Norwalk Domino's Pizza!

In the afternoon, staff was ecstatic to have a special visit from another pup very dear to our hearts -- Marshall from the Norwalk Fire Department - IA!

While staff took their breaks from library projects, Trixies Salon & Spa donated their time and services to help relieve stress of staff members with hand and neck massages in our study room.

HUGE thank you to each individual, business, and organization who donated their time and services to support our library and staff during our inservice day! We are so grateful to have an amazing community who supports the important work we do everyday.

Every language holds a world of knowledge.

Indigenous languages carry generations of stories, traditions, history, and connection to community. Today, you can celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day (October 12th) with us by taking some time to discover a language you may not have explored before and learn more about the people and culture behind it.

With 42 Indigenous and endangered languages available through Transparent Language Online, a few new words can be the beginning of a much bigger journey. You can sign up for Transparent Language Online today using your library card from the Norwalk Easter Public Library!

As we reach the tail end of Banned Books Week 2026, we find it imperative to remember why libraries and their staff are at the forefront of the fight against censorship:

“If librarianship is the connecting of people to ideas—and I believe that is the truest definition of what we do—it is crucial to remember that we must keep and make available, not just good ideas and noble ideas, but bad ideas, silly ideas, and yes, even dangerous or wicked ideas.” - GraceAnne A. DeCandido

Our library will continue to work hard to protect our community's right to read and maintain equitable access to information for all--even beyond Banned Books Week. Let books be written, let books be read, let books shared, let books be loved.

Banned books are never a laughing matter. Books bans overwhelming target marginalized communities and their diverse voices sharing beautiful stories with the world. When these perspectives are erased through book bans, our world becomes a less informed, less diverse, and less inclusive place.

Our annual Fall Festival is officially one week from today! Did you know there is a FREE shuttle available during the event? Park at the Norwalk High School's north lot and board the HIRTA bus at the marked location (look for the blue SHUTTLE sign near the handicap lot), and ride the bus over to the library! When you are ready to return, meet the bus at the library's entrance and ride back to the high school. The bus is handicap, wheelchair, and stroller friendly! We hope to see you next Thursday!
