Happy Thursday Huron County! Huron County Public Health would like to notify property owners that annual effluent sampling for permitted home sewage treatment systems will take place during the week of November 9, 2026.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) requires this annual testing to ensure compliance with permitting requirements.

What property owners need to know:

▪Who: North American Testing (NAT) will conduct the sampling.

▪What: A technician will visit your property to collect an effluent sample from your system’s approved discharge point.

▪How to identify the technician: NAT staff will carry a copy of the notification letter and arrive in a company van with the NAT logo.

▪Billing: Property owners will receive a bill for the administrative fee with their notification letter. A separate bill for the sampling cost will be mailed after testing is completed.

Happy Tuesday Huron County!

This week is National School Bus Safety Week. Huron County Public Health reminds all drivers to stay alert and follow school bus safety laws. When a school bus activates its red flashing lights and extends its stop arm, you must stop to allow children to safely enter or exit the bus.

Remember:
▪Stop for school buses with red flashing lights and an extended stop arm.
▪Never pass a stopped school bus when children are boarding or exiting.
▪Watch for children near bus stops, crosswalks, and roadways.
▪Slow down and stay alert in school zones and residential areas.

Every child deserves to get to and from school safely. One moment of patience can save a life.

October 16th is , encouraging support for farmers and protecting natural resources, and contributing to a future where everyone has access to enough nutritious, diverse and safe food because access to safe food belongs to ✨EVERYONE✨.

The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) promotes the mission above with this year’s theme of “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow” highlighting the importance of harnessing science, technology, and innovation to build agrifood systems that are
more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable: https://www.fao.org/world-food-day/about/en.

Huron County Public Health’s Environmental Health division has Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHSs) on staff who regularly conduct inspections of food facilities, as well as issuing temporary licenses to mobile food facilities like food trucks. The work of our staff aids in ensuring food safety measures are met for Huron County residents. ⭐

On we’d like to thank our REHS’s Carl, Brendan, and Matt for their hard work in keeping food safety a priority in Huron County.

Heads-up, Huron County - Please share the word for this upcoming event, just 10 days away!

Do you have unused or expired medications you’re looking to part ways with? Mark your calendars for Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 24th.

Observed biannually in April and October by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), this event is a nationwide encouragement to safely dispose of medications and therefore reduce the risk of misuse of the medications.

There will be designated drop-off locations on the day of the event that you can locate by searching the DEA's Collection Site Locator: www.dea.gov/takebackday -locator.

However, Huron County has five 24/7 drug drop box locations where the public can discreetly and anonymously dispose of medication:

▪Bellevue Police Department
▪New London Police Department
▪Norwalk Police Department
▪Plymouth Police Department
▪Willard Police Department
▪Huron County Sheriff's Office

**When dropping off medications, please remember to remove any identifiers from the medication bottle/box (ie. Medication labels with your name/address, etc.).**

Additionally, you can safely dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medications at home with the help of a Deterra Drug Deactivation Kit. We have them available for free in the vending machine at our main office at 28 Executive Drive in Norwalk!
