Over 100 students, called "midshipmen," at the University of Notre Dame and St. Our midshipmen have additional required commitments but are able to strike a balance between military discipline and life as a normal college student. To prepare our midshipmen, we focus on academics, leadership, physical fitness, and community involvement. Academic excellence is paramount to the success of each midshipmen and our students are held to a higher standard. Additionally, midshipmen are taught key leadership traits and are given the opportunity to lead their peers. Each year, NROTC Notre Dame hosts a weekend conference in the spring called Naval Leadership Weekend where NROTC units from across the country join us to participate. Our midshipmen also participate regularly in physical fitness to maintain healthy lifestyles and lead more effectively. Lastly, we encourage community involvement through Trident Naval Society, our battalion led community service organization.

This week’s Firstie Friday post features MIDN 1/C Brad Klemz. Brad is from Lake Elmo, Minnesota, and lives in Dunne Hall. He chose Notre Dame because he wanted a challenging environment that fostered collaboration and a strong Catholic faith. He says he knew he wanted to attend Notre Dame as soon as he stepped on campus. During his time here, Brad has enjoyed playing intramural volleyball and pickleball.

Brad chose NROTC because he wants to travel the world and make a difference in people’s lives. He also wants to give back to a country that has given him so many opportunities. Within the Battalion, Brad has served in numerous leadership roles, including Battalion Operations Officer, Naval Leadership Weekend Squad Leader, and Special Events Squad Leader. His most memorable NROTC experiences include going aboard the USS Texas (SSN-775) with MIDN Kim to learn about submarines, beating MIDN Kim in pickleball in the Groton gym, and spending Memorial Day weekend in Boston.

Brad wants to thank his family and friends, as well as Lt. Muldowney, for their guidance and support during his time at Notre Dame. He will graduate as an Economics major with minors in Theology and International Security Studies. He will be commissioned as an ensign in the Navy this spring, where he will serve as a nuclear submarine officer.

Yesterday, the midshipmen of Notre Dame NROTC completed their Service Dress Blue inspections on McCourtney Quad.

Midshipmen are checked on the fit and condition of the uniform, ribbon placement, grooming, and overall military bearing. Upper-class midshipmen often serve as the inspectors, so it gives them hands-on practice in holding their peers to the standard. For Navy and Marine Corps midshipmen alike, it's a chance to learn that small details matter.

This week’s Firstie Friday post features MIDN 1/C Kaitlyn Dooley. Kaitlyn is from Doylestown, PA, and lived in Lyons Hall. She chose Notre Dame after attending an admitted students weekend, where she experienced and fell in love with the ND pride and the powerful campus community. She was greatly impacted by Notre Dame’s many rich traditions, such as singing the alma mater and visiting the Grotto. By the time the weekend was over, she had purchased a sweatshirt at the bookstore, which is her family’s way of committing to a college. Kaitlyn chose NROTC because she wants to be a part of something bigger than herself, and something that can challenge her to be the best possible version she can be.

Within the Battalion, Kaitlyn has served in multiple leadership roles. She has been a C2 Squad Leader, the C2 Platoon Commander, and she is currently serving as our Battalion Commanding Officer. Outside of the Battalion, Kaitlyn is an active member of the campus community, participating in the Cyber Security Club.
Kaitlyn’s most memorable experience in NROTC has been volunteering at the food bank every Friday. The tradition is a great way to give back to the South Bend community and spend time bonding with other Midshipmen.

Kaitlyn wants to thank her family and friends for the support they have given her throughout her time here at Notre Dame.

Kaitlyn will graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering and will commission as an Ensign in the US Navy, serving as a Cyber Warfare Engineer.

Celebrating 251 Years of Naval Service ⚓️

Since October 13, 1775, the United States Navy has protected our nation’s interests, preserved peace, and represented America around the globe. Through every era and every challenge, the Navy’s foundation has stayed the same: Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

Today, Notre Dame Naval ROTC is proud to recognize 251 years of naval excellence. We extend our gratitude to all current sailors, veterans, Notre Dame alumni, and the family members who support them every step of the way.

Happy 251st Birthday to the United States Navy!

This week’s Firstie Friday post features MIDN 1/C Timmy O’Toole. Timmy is from Chicago, Illinois, and lives in O’Neill Family Hall. He has always wanted to attend Notre Dame, and says that campus has long felt like a second home. Timmy chose NROTC because he wants to serve in the Marine Corps and provide the leadership and guidance that young Marines need
and deserve.

Within the Battalion, Timmy has served in many leadership roles. He has been B2-1 Squad Leader, Battalion Sergeant Major, and Flyin’ Irish Captain. Additionally, he will serve as Bravo Company Commander this spring. Outside of the Battalion, Timmy is an active member of the campus community, serving as an O’Neill Hall Resident Advisor and participating in Campus Ministry.

Timmy’s most memorable experiences in NROTC were practicing for and performing his company’s Navy Ball dance during his freshman year.

Timmy will graduate with Bachelor’s degrees in Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics and Theology, and will commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He wants to thank his family and friends, the many great role models he’s had, and his mentors. He also wants to thank everyone who has poured their hearts and time into him and pushed him to be the best version of himself.

This past Wednesday, the Battalion’s Marine Option midshipmen conducted their Land Navigation Exercise. Navigating through the woods, midshipmen tested their ability to read terrain, plot accurate bearings, and move confidently between points using only a map and
compass. These fundamentals remain essential for future Marine officers and directly prepare them for the land navigation evaluation at Officer Candidate School.
