Maybe your kindergartener talks to you but not to anyone outside of the family. Perhaps your middle schooler resorts to mumbling or responding only with hand gestures in social situations. In other kids, these might be ordinary reactions.

However, your child speaks openly at home. Could their public responses be a response to shyness or maybe a side effect of emerging social anxiety? Or could they have a different, albeit related, condition called selective mutism?

Meet Allison Schorr, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Courageous Kids Counseling 🧡

Allison has experience supporting children and families across a variety of settings, including early intervention programs, schools, clinics, and homes. She believes therapy should never be one-size-fits-all and focuses on each child’s strengths to create a space where they feel understood, supported, and confident as they grow.

Outside of work, she enjoys trying new restaurants, eating french fries, and spending time with her orange cat, Roarie! 🐈

A parent knows their child better than anyone else, and if you’ve got a persistent feeling something isn’t right, it’s important to trust those instincts. If you’re wondering about the signs your child needs therapy, sometimes they can seem obvious, but other times, they can be subtle. Maybe your child has started having frequent meltdowns over small things, or they seem unusually quiet and withdrawn after school.

Every parent knows the feeling of trying to cajole their reluctant children to eat their vegetables at dinner time. Kids often don’t like healthy foods, and they can be notoriously picky about what they eat. When children consistently refuse to eat or eat very limited foods, you might be dealing with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Sometimes called a “selective eating disorder,” this condition isn’t the same as picky eating.

“While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.”
- Angela Schwindt

Parenting is full of little moments that teach us, challenge us, and remind us what really matters. The love, patience, and connection you build with your child can shape both of you in ways you never expected. 🧡

Children with sensory processing disorders perceive the world differently from their parents, siblings, and caretakers. Yet many adults have never been introduced to the ways that sensory disorders in children can affect their everyday lives.

If you’ve ever watched a young child at play, you’ve witnessed something remarkable: a child fully absorbed in making sense of their world. Play is not just entertainment for children - it is their primary language. It is how they explore emotions, process experiences, communicate what they cannot yet put into words, and develop the skills they need to navigate life.

But for some teens, the emotional highs and lows go far beyond what can be explained by the typical turbulence of growing up - and recognizing the difference can be genuinely life-changing.
