Owyhee Irrigation District Supplying irrigation water to over 167,000 acres of land in Adrian, Nyssa, and Ontario since 1932. Irrigated agriculture is the region's primary industry.

The major drainage system is the Owyhee River, a tributary of the Snake River. The Owyhee Project, constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation, harnesses the unpredictable Owyhee River to provide water to the fertile soils of the Owyhee and Central Snake River Valleys. In 2008 the valley celebrated the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Owyhee Dam. In 1925, after studying various reports and plans made by the Government engineers, State cooperative boards, and private companies, after conducting further investigation of their own, the Bureau issued a feasibility report recommending the construction of the Owyhee Project. Work began on the storage dam and canal system in 1928, and the first water was delivered to the project lands in 1935. The Owyhee Project was designed to supply water to the entire project area by gravity flow from the Owyhee Reservoir. But, because the Owyhee River's flow is frequently too low to supply the necessary water, privately-constructed pumping plants provide Snake River water to lower-lying project lands. These plants are operated under a 1936 contract between the Bureau of Reclamation and several irrigation districts.

📢 OWYHEE IRRIGATION DISTRICT ELECTION NOTICE 🗳️

The Owyhee Irrigation District will hold an election on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, to elect one Director for the Fourth Division for a three-year term beginning January 19, 2027.

Who Can Vote?
Eligible voters are landowners or contract purchasers of land within the District who are 18 years of age or older and whose property is subject to District assessments. Additional ownership and voting requirements apply.

Please make plans to participate and have your voice heard in the future leadership of the District.

Water User Project Requests!
‍🚜Each year we receive several special project requests from water users, from laying pipes & installing head gates to moving turnouts & cleaning out ditches.
We do our best each year to prioritize & complete as many projects as possible, but we don't always get every request in time or we're not able to complete each project before the water season starts.
We have a page on our website to allow water users to submit their project requests year around, when water season ends we can begin looking at all the project requests, & get a plan for the off-season.
🤝If you have a project you would like the District to consider completing for you this off-season, go to our website; www.oidnh.gov & submit your request to be considered for this year!
You can also stop in to the District Office or call us during business hours to discuss your project.

We prioritize projects based on first come first serve as well as urgency/safety. All projects are subject to a deposit before the work begins & payment for the materials/equipment/labor when the project is completed. Specifics regarding the cost of the project are discussed with the water user before the project is added to the schedule.

We receive several project requests from water users each year, in order to schedule projects appropriately during the off season, we require project requests to be submitted, approved, & a deposit paid BEFORE December 31st each year for the project to be considered for the current year. Any Project requests received on & after December 31st will be considered for next year's schedule.
