ILLINOIS MICROMOBILITY LAW CHANGES – EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2027

Electric bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and other electric-powered devices are becoming increasingly popular throughout our community. With new Illinois laws taking effect January 1, 2027, it's important for riders, parents, and motorists to understand the rules.

Over the coming weeks, the O'Fallon Police Department will be sharing a series of educational posts explaining the different types of micromobility devices, where they can legally be operated, and the requirements riders need to know.

Our goal is education, awareness, and safety. We want to help our community understand these changes before they take effect, so everyone can make informed decisions and safely share our roads and pathways.

For additional information, visit the Illinois Secretary of State's official micromobility resource:

https://www.ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/traffic-safety/micromobility-in-illinois.html

Know what you ride. Know the rules. Ride safe.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Tom Bates on his retirement from the O’Fallon Police Department!

Officer Bates has served more than 20 years with OPD, following five years of service with the Shiloh Police Department. Altogether, Tom has dedicated more than a quarter century to serving the communities of Shiloh and O’Fallon.

During his time with OPD, Tom has served as a Patrol Officer, Senior Officer, Field Training Officer, Honor Guard Member, Detective, and Investigator with the Major Case Squad.

Tom has been a steady hand for our department, especially as OPD has grown and changed over the years. His experience, professionalism, and calm approach to the job have made him someone our younger officers could look to and learn from. He has been a trusted coworker, mentor, and friend to many throughout the department.

While we are certainly going to miss having Tom around, we are excited for him and his family as he transitions to Retiree.

Thank you, Officer Bates, for more than 25 years of dedicated service to the communities of Shiloh and O’Fallon. You have earned this retirement, Tom. We wish you and your family nothing but the best!

Congratulations, Officer Bates!

Last night at the O’Fallon City Council meeting, we had the honor of recognizing four O’Fallon Police Officers and four O’Fallon-Shiloh Paramedics with Life Saving Awards for their actions during a medical emergency earlier this year.

On May 6, 2026, officers and paramedics were dispatched to the Quality Inn for a 57-year-old man suffering from a severe medical emergency in his hotel room.

Our officers arrived within five minutes of being dispatched and immediately began CPR. Just six minutes after the initial dispatch, they administered a shock with an AED. A second shock was administered before care was transferred to our EMS personnel.

Our paramedics continued working on the patient and transported him to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, where he later underwent surgery.

We are very happy to share that he has since made a full recovery.

This is a great example of what can happen when trained people, the right equipment, and a fast response all come together. From the first officers through the door to the paramedics who continued his care on the way to the hospital, every minute mattered.

Congratulations to Paramedics Terry Sill, Donovan Knapp, Ryan Hodge, Marty Nungessor (Not Pictured), and Officers Kathy Effan, Scott Votrain, Brett Johnson, and Ty Matzenbacher, who were recognized last night. Their actions helped give this man another chance at life, and we are extremely proud of them.
