The October meeting agenda should be released on Monday. If you would like to discuss any items on the agenda or have anything else you’d like to discuss, I will be at Spencer Road library, Study Room C on Wednesday from 6-7pm, and would love to talk to you! Normally, I hold these meetings on Tuesdays, but I will be attending a PTO meeting on Tuesday this week.

If you are unable to attend, but would still like to get in touch, please leave a comment on this post and I will respond throughout the week.

Other Board members may also attend this meeting, and depending on the concerns raised, I may direct you to the appropriate person or department that is best able to assist.
Please know that prior to a Board decision, I speak as one of seven Board members and will share my own views and opinions. Once the Board has considered an issue and a vote has been taken, however, I will respect, honor, and support the decision of the Board as a whole.

What’s kept me ‘board’ this week:

On Monday I attended the regional Missouri School Board Association meeting at Eureka High School, where the focus was on school funding. The main highlights for Missouri public schools were:

The cost of expenses continues to outpace the revenue coming in.

Rising costs in food and food delivery are causing ‘dramatic net losses in our food service programs’ - Net loss in 24-25 were $69,500,000

While transportation revenue increased, so did the cost of transporting students, leading to an annual cost over revenue to be $431,000,000.

All participants were asked to put a yellow ticket in the area of expenses where they felt most of their funding was going, and a green ticket where they would like to invest more. The majority of districts put both tickets in staff salary and benefits.

On Tuesday, as Parents as Teachers’ ‘Board Buddy’, I attended their Community Advisory Committee where they are beginning to work on action steps to achieve their 26-27 goals which are:

Support early literacy and encourage parent-child reading at home by acquiring and distributing a minimum of 2,000 books to district families by May 2027

Increase Parent Educator knowledge of protective factors by 25% and integrate at least one protective factor concept into 90% of family home visits by May 2027.

Increase Parent Educator knowledge of community resources and strengthen connections between families and available supports by identifying, learning about, and sharing information about an average of five relevant community resources or organizations with each family throughout the program year.

If you have any gently used books suitable for pre-K children that parent educators can provide families on their home visits, please call 636-851-6060.

Finally, today, I represented the Board at PALS’ Spooktacular for children 5 and younger at Central Elementary where they got to trick or treat, play games, and do some arts and crafts. It was a great event, which was incredibly well planned and all the kiddos had a great time.

It is understandable and expected that a lot of our community will be asking, “Why are you asking to transfer funds and borrow money through Propositions O and H?” Here is one reason why.

DESE, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, has stated that it will take approximately $270,000,000 in additional funding to fully fund the state’s public school funding formula next year. But this week, the Missouri State Board of Education declined to ask for that additional funding and instead asked lawmakers to allocate essentially the same amount schools are receiving this year; once again, underfunding the formula.

According to the Missouri Independent, a Board member from Chesterfield stated, “Underfunding the formula is a decision for lawmakers to make, Casey said. The board’s duty is to advocate for schools, she said, saying it was unprecedented for the state board to not recommend full funding of the formula.”

In short, the State Board of Education opted not to even ASK for the money needed to fully fund the formula.

So, why are Propositions O and H on your November ballot? Because when we aren’t getting the funding we need at the state level, we have to look at the options available to us locally. Asking our community for permission to transfer existing levy funds through Proposition O and borrow funds for major building improvements through Proposition H helps us keep the ship afloat when the funding we should be receiving from the state simply isn’t there.

The Missouri State Board of Education settled an impasse on the budget by agreeing to cut a proposed increase to schools' state aid.

From first hand experience, I can tell you how hard this team works. Every year, the reliance on digital services increases, and so does the support needed to keep staff and students online. With the move to 1:1 this year, reliance on this department to always be on their game only goes up.

Happy IT Professionals day, put those tickets in, and always try turning it off and on again first!
