The Oak Grove Police Department thanks the community for helping make the first week of school safe and successful for students, pedestrians, and motorists. We are grateful that everyone adjusted to the start of the school year without any serious incidents.
Many people in our community have likely noticed the growing number of electric bicycles and motorized bicycles. In previous posts, we explained which electric bicycles are treated as bicycles and which are considered motorized vehicles. The reference chart below provides a simple guide. As a reminder, students under the age of 16 should only ride Class 1 or Class 2 electric bicycles to school.
Motorized scooters and skateboards have also become notoriously popular. While they may seem like a quick way for young people to get around, they are not legal to operate on city streets or public sidewalks and should not be ridden to school. These devices are intended for use on private property only. City Ordinance Section 385.075 specifically prohibits operating them on public property, including public sidewalks.
In addition to being prohibited by ordinance, motorized scooters and skateboards should not be ridden to school because they create serious safety concerns. They are difficult for drivers to see, provide no protection in a crash, and require riders to understand and obey the same traffic laws as licensed motorists. Students who are not old enough to legally drive do not have the training, experience, or legal authority to operate these devices in traffic. Keeping scooters and skateboards off public roadways helps prevent serious injuries and keeps students, drivers, and pedestrians safer.
Thank you to parents, students, school staff, and community members for doing your part to keep our students safe. Also, please continue demonstrating patience and attention around school zones which will help protect students as they travel to and from school each day.
