Attendees will gain insights into creating environments that prioritize acceptance, autonomy, and well-being, by encouraging meaningful connections, supporting emotional well-being, and teaching self-advocacy skills. Together, we can create a world that values and uplifts every member of our community.

October is , and CMHB is proud to support Community Support Services this month and throughout the year!

Through a variety of services including residential living, community day services, home-based support, and supported employment, CSS serves over 1,000 children and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families across west suburban Cook County and eastern DuPage County annually. Services are designed to meet individual needs, foster independence, and respect the dignity, rights, and self-determination of each person.

CMHB helps support CSS Respite, Case Management, and Supported Employment programs, including an employment program at Oak Park and River Forest High School (OPRFHS) that provides transitional services and supported employment programming to students. Their Supported Employment services are designed for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities who are interested in working in the community and include customized vocational training, job-search and interviewing skills, employment support, and advocacy. Additionally, the program helps businesses in the community use best practices in working with people with disabilities, ultimately building bridges and long-lasting relationships between employers and adults with disabilities.

Parents and caregivers of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) are invited to join us for free upcoming person-centered planning webinars!

Person-centered planning is process that gathers the individual, their family, friends, and support staff to look beyond a medical diagnosis and ask, "What does a meaningful, happy life look like for this person?" It is a dynamic, human-first approach that helps map out concrete steps to help them achieve goals regarding housing, employment, relationships, and community involvement.

CMHB is partnering with Butterflies for Change to offer three education sessions (based on the age of the individual) to learn about how person-centered planning can help families plan for different life transitions and map out a support system for an individual’s desired future.

Tuesday, October 20th from 6:00-7:30pm (13–22 Years)
Tuesday, November 3rd from 6:00-7:30pm (22 Years and Up)
Wednesday, November 4th from 6:00-7:30pm (Birth–13 Years)

October is (DVAM). This month and throughout the year, CMHB is proud to support Sarah's Inn and its mission to improve the lives of those affected by domestic violence and to break the cycle of violence for future generations.

Sarah's Inn focuses on ending relationship violence through domestic violence crisis intervention, community education, and violence prevention programs for youth and adults.

CMHB funding helps support Sarah's Inn Intervention and Prevention Programs. The Intervention Program provides services to victims of domestic violence including a 24-hour crisis line, safety planning, emergency shelter referrals, transportation and housing assistance, counseling, and legal advocacy as well as partner abuse intervention. Services are provided in English and Spanish.

The Prevention Program works with adolescents through the Together Strong Project, providing critical information on building healthy relationships, how to get help if they are a victim of violence or abuse, and how to advocate against violence as a bystander. Programs are taught during PE/Health classes at D97 middle schools and OPRF High School.

"Age is Not the Diagnosis: Geriatric-Informed Mental Health Care"
Presented by Nicole Rea, MA, MSW, LCSW
Clinical Services Manager for Senior & Disability Services at Oak Park Township

As Illinois’ older adult population grows, behavioral health professionals are increasingly called upon to provide effective care to older adults, yet many receive limited training in geriatric mental health. This interactive presentation challenges common myths and age-related biases while exploring how mental health concerns can present differently in later life and intersect with physical health, cognition, social connection, and functional wellbeing. Participants will learn how geriatric-informed care replaces assumptions about “normal aging” with thoughtful assessment and evidence-based, holistic approaches that promote autonomy, resilience, engagement, and quality of life. The webinar will also offer practical strategies for adapting clinical practice and highlight local and statewide resources, including Oak Park Township’s Thriving in Aging Program (TAP).
