It's been a busy month for the Oak Ridge Fire Department! Earlier this month, Engines 2, 3, 1, Tower 20, Rescue 30, and the Battalion Chief responded to a reported structure fire on Tacoma Road. Engine 2 and Tower 20 arrived first on scene and were met by a resident of the involved 4-unit apartment building.

The resident led firefighters to a back porch area where a box of discarded materials, including hot charcoal briquettes, had burned against the building. A small area of siding burned, but luckily, the fire did not spread further. The burned material was removed and extinguished, and firefighters ensured there was no further fire extension.

The closest water supply for Engine 2 was blocked by a truck parked in front of the fire hydrant.

CONTROLLED BURNS: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership with personnel from the Tennessee Division of Forestry (TDF), will conduct controlled burns of woodland and grassland areas on the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation on Tuesday, September 29.

Burns will take place at the Solway Bend and Gallaher Bend fields near the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). These burns will total under 10 acres, are expected to begin after 11 a.m., and conclude by 6 p.m. Each burn is expected to last approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

The public can expect to see some smoke from this activity; however, smoke in this and other areas in the region could also be the result of prescribed burns undertaken by other federal and state agencies.

Oak Ridge Firefighters completed in-service training on Hazardous Materials Response. ORFD responds to Hazardous Material incidents in the city, and the surrounding areas when requested. We also work closely with both ORNL and Y-12 Fire Departments to ensure a unified response to various emergencies.

Division Chief Ben Taylor with Y-12 Fire Department brought sampling equipment for ORFD members to train on. This equipment assists firefighters to identify materials so we can respond appropriately.

Their robotic dog also demonstrated its usefulness to responders when we need to operate in an environment that is too hazardous to risk human life. ORFD has also purchased new equipment to assist with finding and identifying radiological sources, which was also covered. As the vast amount of nuclear development continues inside the city limits, your Oak Ridge Firefighters with IAFF Local 1346 remain committed to protecting the lives of our citizens and visitors to our city!
