VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Andria Brucks has volunteered at the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter for a little over 3.5 years. She moved here from California 4 years ago and could not wait to get connected with the shelter!

Her extreme love for dogs is what motivated her to really get involved. From time to time, she will foster the shelter dogs. Her favorite part of volunteering is loving on the dogs. She also values learning each animal’s story and understanding what brought them to the shelter, recognizing that none of them is there by choice.

She wants to show these animals that not all humans are bad and wants them to know they are loved and not forgotten. Thank you, Andria!🐾

Every good driver knows that pedestrians have the right-of-way. Always yield to pedestrians anywhere in a crosswalk, and never try to pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. When approaching a crosswalk, assume there could be someone crossing where you can’t see and approach with caution.

Phone use remains one of the most preventable causes of distracted driving.

According to NHTSA, distracted driving claimed 3,275 lives in the U.S. in 2023.

Switching devices to ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode can curb the urge to check notifications on the road. If you have a passenger you trust, let them handle messages, music, or navigation for you!

Trains are quieter and faster than you might expect, and only trains belong on the tracks. The only safe and legal place for anyone to cross railroad tracks is at designated crossings. Pay close attention to warning signs and signals, and remember to look for an oncoming train before crossing.

If your vehicle gets stuck on train tracks, exit the vehicle and call the number on the blue sign.
