Today, June 15th we recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Today we stand together to protect, respect, and empower older adults. Together, we can help build safer, stronger communities for all older adults.

Warning Signs of Elder Abuse

Be alert for indicators such as:

Unexplained injuries or changes in behavior

Signs of neglect, malnutrition, or poor hygiene
-Social isolation or fearfulness
-Unusual banking activity or financial exploitation
-Caregiver stress or concerning caregiver behaviors

Thanks to our dedicated IRS-certified volunteers, ACSSA’s VITA program helped Alameda County residents file their taxes for free and access eligible tax credits this season.

✅ Served over 2,000 taxpayers — including families, seniors, students, and individuals with low to moderate incomes
✅ Secured more than $3.4 million in total refunds
✅ Returned over $1 million through the Child Tax Credit / Additional Child Tax Credit
✅ Delivered over $980,000 through the Earned Income Tax Credit
✅ Provided over $20,000 in Education Tax Credits
✅ Partnered with the Independent Living Program to support foster youth through self-filing workshops and tax education
