Creek to Bay Day was a success! From our cherished creeks and parks to shoreline trails and neighborhood green spaces, 46 volunteer‑powered sites were cleaned and cared for thanks to volunteers across the Town! Thank you, Coordinators and Volunteers, your work not only restores these places but celebrates them, showing just how vital they are to our city’s health, beauty, and resilience. 🌎🌊✨
🌊 Waterways
Volunteers cared for the San Francisco Bay, Oakland Estuary, Tidal Canal, San Leandro Bay, Lake Merritt, Arroyo Viejo Creek, Courtland Creek, Glen Echo Creek, Peralta Creek, and Sausal Creek. Clearing litter that entered the waterway to reduce water pollution and planting native vegetation while removing invasives to restore healthy habitat. That includes critical habitat for Oakland's official bird, the Black-crowned Night-Heron. Volunteers even got on the water and kayaked to clean our hard-to-reach shorelines. Clean water and thriving shorelines start with hands-on care like this.
🌳 Green Spaces
At open spaces, city and regional parks, and community gardens, volunteers pulled invasive species and cleared dead plant material to reduce fire risk, while tending native plants that keep Oakland's ecosystem in balance. This work protects both the wildlife that depends on these habitats and the neighborhoods that border them.
🏘️ Streets
Neighborhood streets got some love too when volunteers cleared debris to stop pollution before it can wash into our storm drains, getting ahead of the rainy season and keeping that runoff out of our creeks and the Bay.
