In March 1934, Stalin re-criminalized homosexuality across the whole of the Soviet Union. Henceforth anyone involved in homosexual acts could be sent to prison for three to five years. In the early years of the Russian Revolution, however, homosexuality had been legalized—but this is something you will find little mention of in the literature produced by the official Communist Parties after 1934. Today’s Stalinists, who model themselves on Stalin’s regime, have a lot of explaining to do.

Should we hit the streets in protest and give vent to our anger? Should the labor leaders mobilize their members to support our class sisters who are under attack? Unequivocally, yes. But protesting will not be enough. Rights are ultimately only as good as the paper they are printed on unless they are backed up by force—in this case, by the mobilized working class fighting for political and economic power.
