Prospective Kinder and Transfer tours

Interested in joining Joaquin Miller Elementary? Whether you’re a prospective kinder or transfer family, come learn about what makes our school great! You will have the opportunity to meet Principal Banks and hear more about our school community. There will also be a Q&A with current JM parents, along with a tour of kinder classrooms. We are excited to be partnering with Zachary’s Pizza on Grand Ave in Oakland for another fundraising dine-out night. On Wednesday, October 26th, from 11:00am - 8:30pm, Zachary’s will donate 15% of your pre-taxed bill to Joaquin Miller Elementary.

Come enjoy a nice dinner out or you can order take out! All you need to do is present the attached flyer via print out or smartphone.

Each in-store OR online purchase made using our school’s promo code: JMES2022 during the month of October will earn our school 10% of the pre-tax total. Don’t forget to think ahead for birthdays, baby gifts, holiday gifts, etc.

Have you met Ms. Gullikson? If your child has ever stepped foot in JM's magical library, they most certainly know who she is!

Ms. Gullikson, Joaquin Miller's amazing librarian, has worked at JM for close to 20 years, making the library a welcoming space for all. She has built an incredible collection for our students, with over 10,000 items including up to date books, graphic novels, popular series, magazines, as well as access to the district's large online collection, Sora. Each classroom visits the library once a week where all grades enjoy a read-aloud followed by book selection. Ms. Gullikson helps students find books to spark or continue their love for reading, provides research project assistance, and supports our staff with timely books that tie into the curriculum and social emotional learning goals.

Ms. Gullikson also oversees these events, which are a HUGE part of what makes JM so special for our students and community:

- Annual Book Fair fundraiser,

- Author / storyteller visits, and

- The annual MLK Oratorical festival.

The PTA also pays for Ms. Ahn, our library assistant, who works 5 hours a week cataloging, repairing, and taking inventory - basically keeping the collection in good shape for the students. Ms. Ahn and Ms. Gullikson make a great team!

In order to keep Ms. Gullikson, Ms. Ahn and JM's fabulous library and related programming, the PTA needs your participation in the Kids Come First Fundraiser which ENDS THIS WEEK on October 1! This campaign typically raises more than $50,000. We are currently significantly behind our $50,000 goal and we need your contribution right away. The PTA's suggested contribution amount for this fundraiser is $500 per child but any contribution amount is valued and appreciated. Believe it or not, the 2020-2021 school year is coming to an end! Come celebrate all your kiddos have accomplished this year by attending our IN-PERSON Open House on Wednesday, May 11 from 6-7 p.m. All students, parents, and guardians are welcome! Due to the recent rise in positive COVID cases, all adults will be expected to wear masks while in the building. The parking lot at the back of the school will open at 5:30 p.m.

As you may remember, JM has an ongoing fundraising partnership with Minted. If you order from them using our JM fundraising code, you get 20% off and 15% is donated back to the school. This works for everything on the Minted site, not just holiday cards!
