This is a post about …... ☀️
Last Saturday, to my disbelief - in walks a family (Sarah), that I hadn’t seen in years.
Her beautiful son was 6 years old back in the day, he would plummet into the store at high speed, check out all of the new tchotchkes (knickknacks), run around in circles and walk behind the cash register to talk with me. Every time. I remember telling him I was going to put him to work one day. 😉
I haven’t seen them in 8 years.
they walked in, her and I cried. I remembered our conversations about motherhood. I admired that she homeschooled her children. She said when we first met I asked her to share about her hijab. We were happy to see each other.
And the kid, well he’s 17 now and headed for college. I asked him what he wanted to study and he said, “urban planning to build equitable communities.” A man after my own heart.
When you operate a mission shop smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood, you become a part of the community. You see kids grow up, folks age and gray (including myself). This experience wasn’t in my social enterprise playbook, didn’t know I needed it.
I’m grateful through , we get to experience the gift of humanity. ☀️🙌🏿🧕🏽🙋🏿♀️
