The Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the rich history, culture, entrepreneurship, and contributions of Oakland’s Latino and Hispanic communities.

This year, that vibrant culture is on spectacular display in the Fruitvale with the arrival of a new 35-foot Catrina, a striking addition to the neighborhood and a celebration of the traditions, creativity, and cultural heritage that make the Fruitvale such an important part of Oakland.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we encourage our community to visit the Fruitvale, experience the Catrina, support local businesses and restaurants, and recognize the generations of Latino leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, and families who continue to shape Oakland.

Another packed week with the Oakland Chamber.

From celebrating Oakland’s rich cultural identity to recognizing a century of business leadership, the Oakland Metro Chamber was proud to be part of some truly significant moments across our city this week.

In Fruitvale, we joined The Unity Council and community partners in welcoming La Catrina, a monumental 34-foot sculpture handcrafted in Mexico City and now standing proudly at Fruitvale Transit Village as the tallest Catrina in the United States.

The celebration brought together a ceremonial blessing, baile folklórico, TURF Inc. dancers, mariachi, and remarks from Mayor Barbara Lee. More than the arrival of a new Oakland landmark, the ceremony celebrated the powerful connection between Mexico and Oakland and the generations of immigrants, families, artists, businesses, and community leaders who have helped make Fruitvale the vibrant community it is today.

We were also honored to celebrate an extraordinary Oakland business milestone as McGuire and Hester marked 100 years in business.

A century of building, growing, creating jobs, and contributing to the communities they serve is an incredible achievement. It was a privilege to join the McGuire and Hester team, partners, and community members in recognizing the people and history behind 100 years of success.

Two very different celebrations. One remarkable city.

Weeks like this are a reminder of what makes Oakland special: our culture, our businesses, our history, and the people who continue to invest in this community and shape its future.

Oakland Tech Week is underway, and the chamber's own Oliver Gutierrez joined local leaders for “AI and Oakland’s Future Workforce: A Fireside Chat,” exploring how artificial intelligence is changing the way we work, learn, and create economic opportunity.

Hosted by The Unity Council’s Fruitvale Responsible AI Zone (RAIZ), the conversation brought together leaders from workforce development, technology, education, business, and community to discuss both the opportunities and challenges presented by AI.

As Oakland continues to grow as a center for innovation, conversations like these are critical to ensuring that technological advancement translates into meaningful pathways for Oakland residents, workers, entrepreneurs, and businesses.
