The Park District welcomes Jonah Nicholas as its new AGM/CFO, effective June 29. Bringing nearly 20 years of public-sector financial leadership experience, Mr. Nicholas will oversee the Park District’s financial operations and help support its mission of preserving open space and serving East Bay communities.

Exciting news for open space in Livermore: the East Bay Regional Park District has completed the purchase of 4.5 acres from the City of Livermore to expand Doolan Canyon Regional Preserve.
While the Preserve is not currently open to the public, this newly acquired land could one day serve as a staging area and the first segment of a public trail if the Park District determines the Preserve can safely support public access.

Celebrate Juneteenth with a Free Park Day! The Park District invites visitors to celebrate Juneteenth on Friday, June 19 with a Free Park Day in honor of the nationally recognized celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Enjoy naturalist-led hikes and special programs at Coyote Hills, Black Diamond Mines, and Thurgood Marshall Regional Parks. Fees waived include parking, horse entry, boat launching, and fishing. What do all these critters have in common? They’re all tracked in the NatureCheck report from the East Bay Stewardship Network — a coalition that includes the East Bay Regional Park District. NatureCheck helps us understand the health of East Bay ecosystems and assess native species communities, including the Grasshopper sparrow, Golden eagle, and California tiger salamander.

The East Bay Stewardship Network brings together agencies and organizations caring for more than 250,000 acres of interconnected land in the East Bay. Its new website is now live, with more information about NatureCheck and other EBSN projects, including wildlife crossings and vegetation mapping.

Trails Challenge: Beat the Heat! Wondering how to work on the 2026 Trails Challenge in the hotter summer weather? In the warmer months, be sure to head out early in the day to avoid the hottest hours and always pack lots of water and energy snacks for the longer trails. Some trails are generally cooler because of abundant tree cover or bay breezes. 👟Moderate | Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail | 7.5 mi.
This out-and-back paved trail has an abundance of shade, making this a popular hike year-round.
