May is recognized as National Small Business Month. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) celebrates National Small Business Week (NSBW) from May 3-9th, acknowledging the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. The SBA recognizes their hard work, ingenuity, dedication, and their contributions to the economy. Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. They employ almost half of U.S. workers and represent 99.9 percent of all businesses in the country. This month we thank the many small businesses like our own that help support our country and the city of Oakland. LoweCG is a small, women-owned business in Oakland and for almost 20 years has been working to provide local youth with ample opportunities to enter into the construction business. Our employees work to ensure that Bay Area construction benefits Bay Area residents and the community. LoweCG has been hard at work supporting our community through volunteering and donation campaigns. We are almost halfway through our 12 for 20 campaign where we are joining a volunteer activity or sending a donation every month for a year until our 20th anniversary in August.

In February, our team member Leilani Ison participated in a Black History Month reading with Acorn Middle School in Oakland. "Leilani was partnered with another volunteer and was were able to visit a 1st grade classroom where she read a book titled, “Wash Day” by Tanisia Moore and a 5th grade classroom where she read a book titled, “How Do You Spell Unfair?” by Carole Boston Weatherford. Leilani says that the reading opportunity was very appreciated as she is currently supporting a project at the same school site. We thank the Oakland Public Education fund for this incredible opportunity to support Oakland youth in their literary goals and programming.

For March, our CEO Andrea Lowe ran in the Oakland Marathon 5k supporting Oakland Lacrosse Club on her running page. The Oakland Marathon took place around Lake Merritt on a day with great weather, and Andrea even hit a PR for the race, two claps for her!! 👏👏 We appreciate everyone who donated to this vital youth sports organization. We have big things planned for our 20th anniversary and will soon be sharing more information about what we plan to do for our big day. In the meantime, stay on the lookout for more 12 for 20 activities!!!

To continue with our Women's History Month highlight series, today we would like to honor an incredible woman in construction who has pushed the boundaries of gender inclusion and equality.

Linda G. Alvarado is the CEO and Founder of Alvarado Construction, a woman and minority owned Commercial General Contractor, Construction Manager, Development company based in New Mexico. Founded in 1976, the company has led projects such as the Denver Hyatt Hotel, the Hispanic Heritage Center in Denver, the Destiny USA shopping center and the Escuala Tlatelolco building. Alvarado was inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame in 2003, and has won countless other awards for her work in the construction and Hispanic community. She made history in 1992 when she became the first Latino (man or woman) to own a MLB team, the Colorado Rockies.

Her historic trailblazing in the field of construction showcases the tenacity of women across our country. As a fellow woman-owned firm, we are inspired by stories such as Alvarado's and encouraged to continue our work in leveling the playing field for women in construction.

March is Women's History Month! For our weekly series highlighting influential women community members, we are spotlighting an innovative store right off of MacArthur, Free Oakland Up!

This store created by Jocelyn Meggait in 2014 is more than a store to buy clothes and living accessories, its an example of the strength of our Oakland community. Free Oakland Up incorporates a "free Utopian economy" where the store has free items you can pick up outside the store, or free items inside that you can collect. We encourage you to stop by and donate any furniture, art, or lightly used clothes. Their website freeupus/home highlights a host of connected projects and events from Las Vegas to Austin, Texas.

They are open from Thursdays to Sundays, 12-4 at 2809 MacArthur Blvd. Oakland CA 94602
