Community Complaints Lead to Weapons and Narcotics Seizure

In response to community complaints, Oakland Police Department (OPD) patrol officers assigned to Area 6 in East Oakland recovered multiple fi****ms, suspected drugs, and took several people into custody during an investigation Wednesday.

Just after 7:45 p.m. on October 14, 2026, officers conducting a security check in the 500 block of 105th Avenue saw four individuals exiting a residence through windows. They detained the individuals and found a backpack containing suspected narcotics and packaging materials.

Officers contacted a person inside the home who agreed to a search of the residence the group was leaving. During the search, officers recovered two loaded fi****ms, including one with a 40-round magazine, and more than a dozen boxes of am******on.

The investigation also resulted in the seizure of cash and suspected narcotics consistent with drug sales.

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) arrested Vernika Dunbar in connection with the homicide of Mackayla Paige, which occurred on October 11, 2026, in the 200 block of 14th Street. OPD officers took Dunbar into custody that same day.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged Dunbar with her involvement in the crime.

OPD Seeks Help in Solving the Homicide of David Sakurai

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is asking for the community’s assistance in solving the homicide of David Sakurai, who was shot on September 28, 2022, in the 8200 block of Fontaine Street. Officers responded to a shooting at the King Estate Campus, where six people were injured.

David Sakurai later died from his injuries on November 17, 2022.

The Homicide Section is again releasing a brief video showing the suspected shooters prior to the incident. OPD is sharing this video to help identify and locate those responsible for Sakurai’s death.
