Durant Square is located in City of Oakland on the historic site of the Durant Motor Plant and was developed by Signature Properties. The 20 acre site consists of 168 multi-family condominiums and 43 single-family residential homes, along with a 9 acre commercial/retail site.
This historic site was redeveloped from the vacant automobile manufacturing plant to an urban residential site with new commercial/retail components. One of the challenging aspects of this project was to create residential housing within the existing site, while maintaining the historic buildings and elements of the motor plant.
Large portions of the existing historic buildings had to be preserved and retrofitted to accommodate the new residential and retail components. Through careful and creative design procedures, the existing site utilized a majority of the existing utility infrastructure within the project site to serve the new residential and commercial areas.
