Addressing California’s shortage of large-animal veterinarians starts with inspiring the next generation.

Through the FarmVet2B internship program, high school students in Tulare County received hands-on experience in livestock health, veterinary medicine and agricultural careers.

Led by UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine and UC Cooperative Extension academics, the program introduces students to the many pathways available in veterinary health while helping build a workforce pipeline for rural communities.

From practicing sutures and assisting with calf exams to learning about herd health management, students gained valuable insights into careers that are essential to California agriculture.

What happens after a wildfire changes a community?

The latest episode of UC Davis's Unfold podcast takes listeners into the burn zones of Los Angeles County, where researchers and residents are navigating the long-term impacts of wildfire.

One homeowner posted handwritten signs reading “Do not cut tree” to protect the oak trees that survived the fire. At the same time, UC scientists are studying what wildfires leave behind, from damaged ecosystems to harmful air pollutants.

As California's wildfire challenges evolve, researchers, including 's Christopher Shogren, are working to build a new generation of fire science that helps communities prepare, recover, and adapt.

As we celebrate and the International , we're proud to highlight the inspiring story of Fam Lee, community educator with the UC ANR Small Farms Network.

Born in Laos, raised in a refugee camp in Thailand and later settling in California, Fam understands firsthand the challenges many immigrant farmers face.

Today, she uses her farming experience and cultural connections to support Iu Mien strawberry growers across the Sacramento region, helping them access resources, navigate regulations and build successful farm businesses.

“What makes my heart sing the most is when I visit the growers and I see them happy,” says Fam.

Thank you, Fam, for your commitment to California agriculture and the communities you serve.
