ACCFB’s Food Recovery Program helps ensure that more food is available to nourish our community. By diverting surplus food from grocery stores to our network of partner agencies, the program reduces food waste while sharing a variety of quality food with ACCFB’s partners.
Target supports this work in two ways, through local stores that donate food to our program, and through grant funds that support program costs. In 2025, 13 local Target stores donated over a million pounds of food through our Food Recovery Program. This helps mitigate the environmental impact of food waste, reducing 2,724 metric tons of CO2e greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere, the equivalent of over 300,000 gallons of gas burned. Target’s grant supporting food recovery further helps our efforts so we can distribute more food and reduce the environmental impact of food waste, creatively working with the food system to tackle multiple problems at once.

"While this support (CalFresh benefits) does not resolve all of the challenges this client faces—such as securing stable housing and ongoing medical care—it provides a critical foundation. This experience reinforced for me that CalFresh is more than a federal nutrition program—it is a lifeline for some of Alameda County’s most vulnerable residents." -Maiya Edgerly, Outreach Associate at ACCFB
