With heavy hearts, the Ocean Gate Fire Department sadly announces the passing of Ex-Chief Glenn Vahey. Chief Vahey served faithfully in multiple departments in our area during his time in the fire service, including Ocean Gate, Pine Beach and Pinewald. His leadership and drive can be seen in the record of the Ocean Gate Fire Department where he was named Firefighter of the Year multiple times. While he may have left this earth, he will never be forgotten. Rest easy Chief, we have the line from here.

Thank you all who came out last night despite the horrible weather to enjoy the Annual Roast Beef Dinner prepared and served by the members of the Ocean Gate Fire Department. We hope you enjoyed the meal as much as we enjoyed dishing it out. Hopefully, we will see you all again next July when it comes back around!

The Ocean Gate Fire Company and its members offers our deepest condolences to the Diehl family with the sudden passing of previous member FF Joe Diehl. While his time with our department was a small portion of his years in the fire service, we appreciated his commitment and desire to serve the community in a way he truly loved. He will forever be in our thoughts. Rest easy Joe.

Firefighter Joseph E. Diehl-

It is with a heavy heart that the Beachwood Fire Department learned of the passing of former member Joseph E. Diehl. Firefighter Diehl joined our department and was a graduate of the Ocean County Fire Academy in 1998. He served with the Beachwood Fire Department from 1998- 2008 and was key in running our Poker Run Fund Raising events. After moving from Beachwood, Joe volunteered with several Ocean County fire departments including the New Egypt, Manchester, Ocean Gate and Pine Beach Fire Companies. Joe also served as a Sergeant of Arms at the New Jersey State Firefighters Association Conventions. Joe’s roots were in Beachwood FD and he would often stop to visit our members. On one such occasion he was involved in a successful CPR incident involving a child not breathing who was brough to our firehouse. For his actions, Joe was recognized by our Department and the 200 Club of Ocean County receiving their Life Saving Award in 2025. Our thoughts are with Joe’s son Michael and the entire Diehl family. Rest easy Joe, we’ll take it from here.

This evening the members of the Ocean Gate Volunteer Fire Department took in training on new battery operated extrication equipment from Blaze Emergency Equipment. This new equipment is a more modern replacement of outdated and discontinued tools we already had in use. We thank Mayor Curtin, Council President Jim McGrath and the rest of the Borough Council for providing us with this purchase through grant money to better serve the residents of the community.

Keeping hydrants and house exhaust vents clear of snow drifts and build-up during the upcoming snow storm is very important for the safety of our residents. Please make sure to clear snow for all household exhaust vents, as not doing so can cause Carbon Monoxide to return back into your residence. Stay safe, stay warm, and we are here if you need us.
