🎥 Built in 1936, this beautiful Art Deco treasure is now a non-profit community theatre, staffed by volunteers. Board members Michael Law and Travis Byers have been hard at work with their team to keep the Prairie Theatre tradition going.

🍿 Check PrairieTheatre.org and the Prairie Theatre page for more information on movies and showtimes plus upcoming ghost tours! 👀👻

Congrats to Bud Haney - an incredible 60 YEARS cutting hair here in Ogallala. Definitely worthy of Golden Clippers! Wishing you a happy retirement!

✂️ 60 Years Deserves Golden Clippers! 🏆

The Prairie Theatre would like to congratulate our longtime neighbor, Bud Haney, on his retirement after an incredible 60 years at Haney’s Barber Shop!

For six decades, Bud has been right next door to the Prairie Theatre. Think about everything that has changed in 60 years—the movies, the businesses, the people walking up and down Spruce Street—but through it all, you could count on Bud being there behind the barber chair.

To recognize this incredible milestone, Bud was presented with a pair of golden clippers on behalf of the Prairie Theatre, Lisa and Andy Byers, and Always Kaffeinated.

They may just be golden clippers, but they represent 60 years of haircuts, conversations, friendships, hard work, and service to this community.

We were also proud to put a simple message on the Prairie Theatre marquee for our neighbor:
HAPPY RETIREMENT BUD!

Isn’t this vintage b**r wagon cool? 🍺 The family brewery history from the pre-Prohibition era is just another great story from Second Chapter Brewing. And aren’t great stories fitting, given their location in Ogallala’s old library? Their annual Oktoberfest is in the books, but there’s plenty of fun coming up this fall - from Music Bingo to Books and Brews, so be sure to stay tuned!

That's a wrap on Oktoberfest 2026!

We have many more photos from the festival and stories to share, but for now, here is an end of night photo of our pre-Prohibition b**r wagon. Today, we are giving our staff a much-needed rest day. Thank you for coming yesterday.

See you next week!

A big beautiful harvest moon rising tonight over Roscoe, by our Nebraska historical marker on the escape of the Northern Cheyenne. The anniversary of the 1878 flight is coming up.

Led by Dull Knife and Little Wolf, a band of more than 300 escaped the reservation they'd been exiled to Oklahoma and headed for their homeland in the north, fighting their way across Kansas.

At about noon on October 4, 1878, they arrived at a crossing of the South Platte River and the Union Pacific Railroad northwest of Alkali Station but east of Ogallala. Already aboard rail cars at the fort, the soldiers believed they could stop the Northern Cheyennes at this crossing.

Arriving at 4 p.m., they began tracking the trail leading north, but the Cheyennes had already crossed the North Platte River and escaped into the Sandhills.

The Cheyennes soon parted ways. Little Wolf's people made it home to Montana, but Dull Knife continued to northwest Nebraska. His group was captured and taken to Ft. Robinson. They escaped January 9, 1879, but most were captured or killed in a running fight known as the Cheyenne Outbreak or Ft Robinson Massacre.
