Today, we’d like you to meet Heidi.
Heidi has been connected to Youth Futures for nearly 11 years — first as a volunteer and, for the past five years, as part of our executive team.
Over that time, she has watched hundreds of young people come through Youth Futures, each carrying a different story. What she has learned is that the most powerful intervention often begins with something very basic:
Give a young person a safe place.
Give them time.
And keep showing up.
Heidi describes Youth Futures as a place where young people can make mistakes without being reduced to those mistakes.
Staff set boundaries, but they also explain them. They stay consistent. They listen. They advocate. And when a young person comes back after a difficult day or a poor decision, the first question is not, “How could you do that?”
It is:
“Are you okay?”
From there, they talk about what happened, what comes next, and what the young person wants for themselves.
That steady, nonjudgmental environment matters because adolescence is already a time of experimentation, identity, and enormous change. For young people without a stable home, the stakes are simply much higher.
Youth Futures creates the foundation beneath that growth: three meals a day, a warm place to sleep, adults who are available, and a door that keeps opening.
Or, as Heidi said so beautifully:
“They’re not just our kids. They’re everyone’s kids. Everyone’s future.”
Thank you, Heidi, for nearly 11 years of believing in young people and for helping build spaces where they can believe in themselves, too.
Beds. Belonging. Better Futures. 💚
