Well folks, another Apple Festival is in the books and despite the rain on Friday, it appears the Festival was a good draw for the weekend.

If you attended the parade and you have followed us for some time, you may have noticed an addition of 2 new apparatus. We are working towards big things, not only for our fire protection district but for the entire county.

Rescue 22 is a 2000 International/Kenco walk through heavy rescue truck, formally Aspinwall Fire Department Rescue 102 Asipnwall Pennsylvania. With this unit we carry hydraulic extrication tools, cribbing and struts for vehicle stabilization and the ability to carry 5 firefighters. We also carry all the equipment for high and low angle rope rescue, water rescue and dive rescue. With an on board air cascade system we can provide SCBA refilling on scene and are pushing towards developing a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) using our personnel and volunteers that are interested from across the county for structure fire response to anyone.

21 Truck is a 2000 Spartan/Ferrara 75 foot aerial equipped with a 1500gpm Hale pump and 500 gallons of water, formally Horry County Fire Rescue asset number 31690. This is the first ever ladder truck placed into service outside of the City of Paintsville for Johnson County. It will be used as a ladder company for structure fire response and is a needed/required unit per ISO as we do have more than 5 buildings in our district with a height of over 35 feet. 21 Truck will also be utilized in our Technical Rescue package with R-22 for rope rescue and water rescue responses.

As always, we are looking for more volunteers each and everyday, experience not needed.

And to the lady that was booing us and giving us a thumbs down in the Apple Festival Parade, we want to say thank you for your support. We know we're not everyone's cup of tea, that we can't make everyone happy. But those thumbs down and boos are what pushes us to raise the bar and get better for you and everyone else. Just remember, no matter if you hate us or love us, we will always respond for you emergency, no matter the time, the day or the weather.

Remember, Kentucky’s Fall Fire Hazard Season begins October 1st and continues through December 15th. During this time, please remain aware of current weather conditions, dry vegetation, and Red Flag Warnings that may indicate an increased risk of wildfire. Always follow Kentucky’s burning regulations, use extreme caution when conducting outdoor burning, and never leave a fire unattended. A few extra minutes of caution can help protect our forests, homes, and communities.

At approximately 1:19am this morning, units were dispatched to KY-40 West, Conley Tire, for a confirmed commercial structure fire.
An immediate request was initiated for mutual aid from WR Castle Fire and Rescue and Rockhouse Fire and Rescue for Engine, Tanker and Manpower. Also requested Paintsville Fire Department for Aerial Support and Manpower.
On arrival of first units, radio report advised of main building fully involved with heavy fire and smoke with roof collapse. Downed power lines were also reported.
PFD began immediate elevated stream operations, which was hampered by water supply issues caused by lowered water system pressures. Handlines were deployed from RHFD while trying to relay water to PFD. Water supply shuttle was initiated for OSFD Engine and Ladder Truck utilizing OSFD Tanker and Tanker support from North Magoffin Volunteer Fire Department.
After successfully requesting a system pressure increase, operation moved to defensive on main building with handlines, portable ground monitor and Class A foam.
Concurrently, an offensive attack was coordinated to the workshop building and area with an aggressive interior push by WR Castle Firefighters while Oil Springs units provided RIT.
The fire was brought under control around 3am with overhaul operations starting at 4am. Complete extinguishment was completed by 7am, allowing KY-40 to be reopened for morning travel.
A huge thank you to Paintsville-Johnson County KY Emergency Management Director Paul Burchett for his untiring work ethic and unwavering support for emergency scene management resources and knowledge.
None of this could be accomplished though without the dedicated, hard working and committed volunteers who are the backbones of Johnson County's emergency services. Without these women and men, neither our department nor W.R. Castle Fire-Rescue or Rockhouse Fire & Rescue would exist.
Some better news today, we were able to respond the first in service county volunteer department ladder truck that we purchased just 10 days ago. 21 TRUCK may have been naked, but she still got her first taste of East Kentucky firefighting, a big change from her days with Horry County Fire Rescue (1690).
