“Sitting under the tree was very grounding for me. So, when it came time to get married, it seemed like the place to get married was under Baba’s Tree. It seemed like the closest thing to church. It felt like we were being held and surrounded by something. Ideally, what you experience when you marry another person is that you feel you’re being held, surrounded, and carried by your community, by something bigger when you’re joining your lives together. I feel that Baba’s Tree really provided for that.” -Pamela Goodrum

Today's featured Storyteller from "Tree of Fire" is Pamela Goodrum, who was a resident caretaker with her husband Billy from 1999 to 2002. When they moved to Meher Mount, they had a one-year-old daughter, Rose Goodrum, who visited Baba’s Tree every day with them. Billy and Pamela were married under Baba’s Tree in 1998.

The Storytellers of "Tree of Fire: A Story of Love and Resilience" tell the story of Baba's Tree at Meher Mount. They have given time, love and hard work for the tree’s recovery and continue to play a role in its care and its unfolding story.

"Tree of Fire: A Story of Love and Resilience" will be showing at LA Femme International Film Festival! It will be shown at 5:00 pm tomorrow, Thursday, October 22, 206 at the Regal Sherman Oaks Galleria in Sherman Oaks, California.

The documentary "Tree of Fire" is a heartfelt story of loss, survival, and spiritual connection. After a devastating fire, a once-thriving oak – blessed by Avatar Meher Baba – rises from the ashes to offer love and solace. The tree’s survival becomes a living symbol of resilience and Divine love. Through personal testimonies and breathtaking imagery, the film invites you to rediscover your own capacity for healing, transformation, and spiritual awakening.

LA Femme International Film Festival is a premier festival that focuses on platforming women filmmakers “by women, for everyone.” The Festival was created in 2005, when it became apparent that there was a need to enhance women behind the camera as Directors, Producers, and Writers. LA Femme International Film Festival was the first in Los Angeles to host such an event and film festival empowering women.

“One thing that I would like viewers to take away from my experience and what we did there at Meher Mount is that we are surrounded by what I would call an urban canopy. Much of the wood that gets cut down or is felled is basically wasted. This wood can be used for something that can be functional, beautiful and can last a long time.

And it can also give people an appreciation of their environment. The things that are around them are precious. And when you have this awareness of what’s around you, you can preserve it and make it last either as a living thing or as a functional object.” -Harold Greene

Today's featured Storyteller is Harold Greene, an artisan and owner of Harold Greene Hand Made making one-of-a-kind furniture. He was referred to Meher Mount by his friend and client Ken Pellman. Harold guided the harvesting, milling and storing of the downed wood from Baba’s Tree after the 2017 Thomas Fire.

“Even if your heart is cut to bits, let there be a smile be on your lips.
Here I divulge to you a point worth noting.
Hidden in your penniless hands, is treasure untold;
Your beggarly life will be the envy of Kings (of the world)."
-"Song of the New Life," Dr. Abdul Ghani Munsiff

Meher Baba started the period of His work known as the “New Life” on October 16, 1949.

Before embarking on the New Life, He asked Dr. Abdul Ghani Munsiff to write this poem, “Song of the New Life,” — which describes the conditions of the New Life. Dr. Ghani was a close disciple and childhood friend of Meher Baba.

The photo of Meher Baba was taken during the New Life outside the Nalavala residence in Dehra Dun, India. The photographer is Keki Nalavala.

"The Song of the New Life"

Listen to the silent words of Meher Baba;
The life of all lovers (of God) is based on the practice of these words
If you are serious about living this New Life,
Then whole-heartedly renounce this ephemeral existence.

We have taken to this life, in which we rely only on God;
In this, our Will (to do or die) is strengthened by the oath taken;
We are merrily singing the song of hopelessness;
We are inviting all calamities and difficulties.

We neither wail over lost hopes, nor complain about (broken) promises;
We neither covet honour, nor shun disgrace;
Back-biting we know not, nor do we fear anyone;
This is now the colour of our New Life.

No confusion in the mind, now, nor any ties left;
Pride, anger, lust and greed we know not.
We have no religion nor care for physical and mental fads.
The Sheikh and the Brahmin — typifying all castes and creeds — are now sailing in the same boat.

There is no small or great now, for us all;
The questions of disciple, Master or Godhood, no longer arise;
Brotherliness or fellow-feeling is the link that exists.
And this contributes to our present enjoyment of suffering.

This world or the next, hell or heaven, we no longer bother about.
Shaktis and siddhis, occultism and miracles, we no longer think of;
All these false impressions (thoughts) for us have been purged from the mind.
What has value and importance for us now, is to live in the active present.

Dear ones, take seriously the words of Baba when he says,
Although now, I am on the same level with you all,
Yet all orders from me, good, bad, extraordinary
You should all carry out immediately, leaving the result to God.

Even if the heavens fall,
Do not let go the hand of Truth;
Let despair and disappointment ravage and destroy the garden (of your life),
You beautify it once again, by the seedlings of contentment and self-sufficiency.

Even if your heart is cut to bits, let there be a smile on your lips.
Here I divulge to you a point worth noting.
Hidden in your penniless hands, is treasure untold;
Your beggarly life will be the envy of Kings (of the world).

God exists indeed and true are the Prophets;
Every Cycle has an Avatar and every moment has a Wali,
For us however, it is only hopelessness and helplessness,
How else should I tell you what our New Life is!

-Dr. Abdul Ghani Munsiff, Close Disciple of Meher Baba

About Meher Baba’s New Life (October 1949-February 1952)

In the New Life, Meher Baba and His companions gave up all property and financial responsibilities. They traveled throughout India without money, begging for food, and living in strict accordance with Meher Baba’s conditions of the New Life.

These conditions included absolute acceptance of the circumstances of their lives and consistent good cheer in the face of any difficulty. It was a time of complete helplessness and hopelessness, relying only upon God.

The New Life phase of Meher Baba’s life culminated in early 1952 after more than two years. “This New Life will live by itself eternally, even if there is no one to live it,” said Meher Baba.

“As caretakers of Baba’s Tree, we took it is as a gift to be able to offer that service. And I don’t think we thought about it too much until it caught on fire. Then we said, ‘God, we’re going to be known as the caretakers that burned Baba’s Tree down.’ Thank God it’s still alive.” - Buzz Glasky

The Storytellers of "Tree of Fire: A Story of Love and Resilience" tell the story of Baba's Tree at Meher Mount. They have given time, love and hard work for the tree’s recovery and continue to play a role in its care and its unfolding story.

Today's featured Storyteller is Buzz Glasky, Resident Caretaker at Meher Mount from 2013 to 2019. Buzz Glasky and his wife Ginger were resident caretakers at Meher Mount during the 2017 Thomas Fire. They had to flee from the fire and spent months living nearby in their Airstream trailer. In 2018, they returned to Meher Mount to care for the tree and the property.

“One thing that we found being caretakers is that the guests would come, and they would say, ‘I don't know why I'm here. I don't know how I got here. I was just taking a leisurely ride. And your gates are open, so I'm coming in.’

So, we took them to Baba’s Tree. You don't know what impact being on Meher Mount or being under the tree will have for these people and future guests coming here.” -Ginger Glasky

“I always feel a personal connection with Baba’s Tree. To me it was like this sentinel on the hill that’s like been overlooking this land, this mountain, for centuries. It was like this guardian of the whole place. For me, it felt like it was sort of keeping watch.

Trees have stories, and they can’t speak for themselves. So, it's kind of up to us to tell their stories. I hope people have a chance to go visit and see this incredible tree.” -Ron Holsey
