🚔 | School Safety 🎒

With students back in school, we all play a role in keeping our school communities safe.

A few important reminders:

🔹 Slow down in school zones and obey posted speed limits.
🔹 Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists, especially near crosswalks and school entrances.
🔹 Follow school bus laws—stop when a bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
🔹 Avoid distractions while driving through school zones.
🔹 Follow the directions of crossing guards and be patient during busy drop-off and pick-up times.
🔹 Be alert and report concerns to school staff or law enforcement when appropriate.

Whether you're driving, walking, biking, or dropping off a student, stay alert and help make getting to and from school a safe experience for everyone.

As we head into fall, mornings are getting darker and the sun is setting earlier. With schools back in session, there is also an increase in traffic and activity on our roads.

If you’re walking, biking, or running, help drivers see you:

💡 Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially during low-light hours.

🚲 Use a front white light and rear red light on your bicycle when riding in low-light or nighttime conditions.

🚶 Use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever available and stay alert around traffic.

👀 Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the road—never assume they see you.

🚗 Drivers, please slow down, stay alert, and watch carefully for pedestrians and bicyclists, particularly near schools and neighborhoods.

A little extra visibility can make a big difference. Let’s all do our part to keep everyone safe as the days get shorter.

A phone scam involving the Meridian Township Police Department has come to our attention.

Please know: The Meridian Township Police Department will NEVER call you and demand money or payment to avoid arrest or criminal charges.

If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be a police officer, do not provide any personal or financial information or send money.

To verify whether a call is legitimate, contact the Ingham County Dispatch Center at 517-332-6526.

Please share this information with family, friends, and neighbors to help prevent others from becoming victims of this scam.

September is Su***de Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness, encourage open conversations, and remind our community that help is available and no one has to face a difficult moment alone.

Su***de prevention starts with connection. If you’re concerned about someone, take a moment to check in. Listen without judgment, let them know you care, and encourage them to reach out for support.

If you or someone you know is struggling:

📞 Call or text 988 to connect with the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. In Michigan, calls to 988 are answered by the Michigan Crisis and Access Line (MiCAL), Michigan’s statewide crisis line. Trained crisis counselors are available 24/7 to provide support and connect individuals with resources.

🚨 If there is an immediate danger or emergency, call 911.

A simple question like “Are you okay?” can open the door to an important conversation.

Let’s look out for one another, listen, and remind those around us that their lives are important and help is available.

With another school year beginning, here’s a friendly reminder to stay alert during the morning and afternoon commute:

🚌 Watch for flashing bus lights and be prepared to stop.
🚸 Know where school zones begin and end and follow posted speed limits.
🚔 Expect increased law enforcement presence in school zones and around school campuses.

Let’s all do our part to help make the trip to and from school safe for everyone!
