On Monday we lost a great man. Senator Tom Dugger will always be remembered for his exceptional integrity, acute intelligence, and personal courage. Tom was a committed ally in the fight to steward tax dollars responsibly, and he was a shining example of servant leadership at its best. His expertise as a CPA and his commitment to transparency in government were a bulwark against waste, fraud, and abuse. Tom was willing to ask hard questions on behalf of his constituents, but he always did so with impeccable courtesy. He was a true gentleman. I am so grateful for his distinguished example of public service and his unyielding dedication to the people of this state.

25 years ago today America changed forever. On that day we received a terrible reminder of just how precious and vulnerable every life is. We lost 2,977 men, women and children in the 9/11 attacks. May we always honor them and resolve to protect and comfort their survivors.

As we pause to grieve and remember, let also reflect on the heroism demonstrated by so many brave men and women during one of our nation’s darkest hours. May God bless all those who put themselves in harm’s way to save lives on that awful day.

Happy Independence Day!

250 years ago today, our Founding Fathers declared that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

These words have served as a brilliant North Star for two and a half centuries. They have been our sure guide through war, social change, and technological revolution. May we never lose sight of that which unites us as Americans, and may we always strive to be worthy of the principles enshrined in our Declaration of Independence.

As we gather with family and friends, let’s also remember the countless men and women who stood firm against tyranny of all kinds to build, reform, and defend this nation over the past 250 years. May their example inspire us to carry on, shoulder to shoulder with our fellow Americans, in defense of our common home.
