🎉 A NEW HOME FOR ASTEC SECONDARY SCHOOL! ✂️

ASTEC Charter Schools’ grand opening of its new secondary school building was a huge success! ASTEC scholars, families, faculty, staff, administrators, board members, alumni, and special guests came together to celebrate the new building and ASTEC’s recognition as National Charter School of the Year by Education Insider Magazine.

Doug Fuller, ASTEC Fund Board Chair, welcomed guests and introduced the Fund Board. Franci Hart, ASTEC Governing Board Chair, welcomed everyone, introduced the Governing Board and Dr. Deskin, and announced the creation of two separate endowments: one to support annual maintenance costs and one to support the Bruce Day Library.

Dr. Deskin thanked everyone before the Greater OKC Chamber was introduced. Doug Fuller, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, and Dr. Deskin took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by remarks from the Chamber. Guests then enjoyed refreshments and tours of the new building.

Dr. Deskin’s acknowledgments included the ASTEC community, JanPro, former scholars, faculty and staff, and the many individuals and organizations who helped make this building possible: Dr. Deskin’s family -Wayne, Laura, Linda and Phil; plus, Kerry and Don Kirby; Debra Murray; Bruce Day; Former Counselwomen, Meg Salyer and Ann Simank; Debi Martin and the City of Oklahoma city; the late County Commissioner, Willa Johnson and the County crews; former board chairs, Debra Murray, Tommy Baker, and Brad Martin; Paula Perminter; Y’Melda Y’Herrera; Quail Creek Bank; Inasmuch Foundation; Chickasaw Nation; Walton Foundation; Home Creations; the Farzanehs; The Kerr Foundation; the Oklahoma City Community Foundation; and individual donors.

After leasing former mall space for 26 years, ASTEC built its new, state-of-the-art 157,000-square-foot ASTEC Secondary School, providing students in grades six through 12 with expanded opportunities to learn, create, collaborate, and prepare for the future. The secondary school sits alongside ASTEC’s 60,000+-square-foot prekindergarten-through-fifth-grade elementary school, which opened in 2020, on the centrally located Deskin Campus.

We’re grateful to our finance and construction partners, and to everyone who joined us for this special day. Thank you for helping ASTEC celebrate a new home for our secondary school scholars!

Two Days, One Incredible Team

🏃‍♀️☄️ What a difference two days can make! Despite a late start to the season, Coach Monts helped our Cross Country scholars build confidence, compete, and encourage one another.

🏀 Battle of the Comets is coming! ☄️

Join us Tuesday, October 13, for an ASTEC vs. ASTEC basketball event to kick off the season and cheer on all four Comets teams!

Doors open at 4:00 p.m. | Event begins at 4:30 p.m.
Free entry | Concessions available for purchase

We’ll invite audience volunteers to take part in the half-court shooting challenge after the Middle School Boys game and before the High School Girls game. Come enjoy the competition and show your support for ASTEC basketball! 🏀☄️

🍂 ASTEC schools and offices will be closed for Fall Break on Thursday, October 15, and Friday, October 16.

We will resume normal hours on Monday, October 19. Enjoy the break!

🍿 Friday Snack Attack is coming up this Friday, October 9!

Important Update: Elementary and Secondary (Middle/High) orders now use separate forms. If you have scholars at both sites, please submit a separate order and payment for each site.

Already paid for the year or placed an order before this change? No action is needed. Your scholars will receive their snacks at the correct site.

🧓💛 ASTEC Elementary Grandparents Day 2027 💛

What a wonderful turnout for ASTEC Elementary School’s Grandparents Day lunch! Grandparents traveled from all over the state to share a meal with their grandchildren. The farthest traveler we know of came from more than two hours away!

Our photo op station was a hit—thank you to Ms. Mascote and Ms. Chavez for making it special—and the music was the cherry on top! 🎶

One grandparent shared on our social media: “Had a wonderful day with my great-granddaughter 💖. Fabulous school and staff. The scholars were so polite.”

We’re so glad grandparents and other special adults could spend time with their ASTEC scholars. We have amazing scholars, and our staff and administration are the best!

🧓💛 Día de los Abuelos de ASTEC Elementary 2027 💛

¡Qué gran asistencia tuvimos en el almuerzo del Día de los Abuelos de ASTEC Elementary School! Abuelos y abuelas viajaron desde distintos lugares del estado para compartir una comida con sus nietos. ¡La persona que sabemos que viajó desde más lejos vino desde un lugar a más de dos horas de distancia!

El espacio para tomarse fotos fue todo un éxito. Gracias a Ms. Mascote y Ms. Chavez por hacerlo tan especial, ¡y la música fue el toque perfecto! 🎶

Un abuelo compartió en nuestras redes sociales: “Pasé un día maravilloso con mi bisnieta 💖. La escuela y el personal son fabulosos. Los estudiantes fueron muy educados”.

Nos alegra mucho que los abuelos y otros adultos especiales hayan podido pasar tiempo con sus estudiantes de ASTEC. ¡Tenemos estudiantes increíbles, y nuestro personal y equipo directivo son los mejores!

🫧 Science 7 got messy—or should we say bubbly clean?

In Ms. Megan Rangel’s class, scholars used the scientific method to test which dish soap would make the biggest bubbles. After formulating their hypotheses, they tested each soap, then calculated averages and graphed their data.

The results surprised them: their first guesses weren’t always right! It was a fun, hands-on way to see science in action. 🧪

🫧 ¡En Ciencias 7 hubo un poco de desorden… o mejor dicho, muchas burbujas!

En la clase de la Sra. Megan Rangel, los estudiantes usaron el método científico para probar qué jabón para lavar platos produciría las burbujas más grandes. Después de formular sus hipótesis, probaron cada jabón, calcularon los promedios y representaron sus datos en gráficas.

¡Los resultados los sorprendieron! Sus primeras predicciones no siempre fueron acertadas. Fue una forma divertida y práctica de ver la ciencia en acción. 🧪
