Moosic Borough Update: Birney Avenue Safety
Moosic Borough recently sent a letter to PennDOT requesting a comprehensive traffic and pedestrian safety study of the state-owned Birney Avenue, from East Corey Street to Carroll Street. Our goal is to identify traffic-calming and pedestrian-safety measures, including potential improvements at Rocky Glen Road and Spring Street.
We’re pleased to share that the Safe Streets Lackawanna Study identified Birney Avenue in Moosic as a high-collision roadway, helping validate the concerns we raised.
We thank Lackawanna County for conducting the study and securing funding to move this work forward. PennDOT has confirmed that the studies we requested will be included in the upcoming effort.
On October 12th Moosic Borough Council unanimously approved a resolution officially supporting Safe Streets Lackawanna and the borough’s intention to fully engage in the program.
Moosic Borough will be working closely with Lackawanna County and partnering agencies in this effort to improve roadway safety for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and public transportation users.
We are also actively coordinating with PennDOT on the I-81 project slated to begin in 2027, which will impact Route 11, to ensure Moosic’s concerns are part of those discussions.
The Borough is also working closely with the Moosic Police Department on traffic and safety concerns along Birney Avenue. We greatly appreciate our officers and their continued efforts to help keep our residents and motorists safe.
Our request has been accepted, and we’re one step closer to a safer Birney Avenue. We’ll keep residents updated as these efforts move forward.
Lackawanna County has launched the Safe Streets Lackawanna plan, a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing transportation safety for all users, including drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets for All program, the plan seeks to reduce fatal and severe injury crashes by 50% by 2045. It identifies high-risk areas, particularly along the county’s High Injury Network, and incorporates community feedback to address concerns such as speeding and inadequate infrastructure.
The plan employs the Safe System Approach, focusing on engineering, education, enforcement, engagement, evaluation, and equity, and outlines strategies for implementation and performance tracking. Educational workshops will commence to promote awareness and engagement.
