⚠️ NOR’EASTER UPDATE ⚠️
The hybrid nor’easter is now impacting our area, with northeast winds already increasing across Old Lyme and the surrounding region. The storm will continue to strengthen through Saturday, with the most significant impacts expected tonight through Sunday.
Residents should be prepared for:
💨 Strong, prolonged northeast winds — gusts of 45–55 MPH are expected, with a reasonable worst-case scenario of 55–65 MPH.
🌧️ Heavy rainfall — 2–4 inches of rain is currently expected, with locally higher amounts possible.
🌳 Downed trees and limbs — saturated soils, persistent winds, and fully leafed trees could increase the potential for tree damage and blocked roadways.
⚡ Power outages — scattered to widespread outages are possible, and some outages could last for several days.
🌊 Coastal and low-lying flooding — multiple high-tide cycles Saturday through Sunday could produce flooding of vulnerable coastal roads and low-lying areas.
🔋 Keep phones and other essential devices charged.
🔦 Keep flashlights readily available and avoid relying on candles if the power goes out.
🏠 Stay indoors during periods of strongest winds and avoid going outside unnecessarily. Do not attempt to clear gutters, drainage areas, or move outdoor items in the dark or during hazardous conditions.
🌊 Residents in low-lying and coastal areas should be prepared for rising water during the upcoming high-tide cycles.
🚗 If you encounter a flooded roadway, TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN. Never drive through water of unknown depth.
This is expected to be a long-duration storm, with conditions continuing through the weekend. Prepare for possible road closures in low-lying areas and potential power disruptions lasting several days.
Please remain weather aware, monitor trusted local information, and check on neighbors when it is safe to do so.
Old Lyme Emergency Management will continue to monitor conditions and provide additional information as needed.
Stay safe, stay informed, and please take the storm seriously.
