🔥⚡ CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY!™ ⚡🔥

As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, remember that fire safety doesn't stop when the week does.

Every day, we use devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, phones, laptops, tablets, headphones, toys, power tools, e-bikes and more.

🦸 Use your charging superpowers:

🔌 Use the correct charger
🔋 Charge on a hard, flat surface
🚲 Charge larger batteries safely and preferably outside
⚠️ Stop using batteries that are damaged or showing warning signs
🔌 Unplug devices when fully charged
🔥 Keep charging areas clear of exits

And don't forget the basics: working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan can make a life-saving difference.

From all of us at the Old Town Fire Department, thank you for helping us make our community safer.

Charge smart. Stay alert. Stay safe. ❤️🚒

🔋⚡ 100% CHARGED? TIME TO UNPLUG!

We’ve all done it, plugged in our phone before bed and left it charging all night.

This Fire Prevention Week, make a small change to your charging routine.

🦸 Your charging superpower:
Unplug your device when it is fully charged.

Leaving devices plugged in can increase heat and stress on the battery.

So when your battery hits 100%:

🔌 Unplug it.

It’s a simple habit that can help reduce the risk of battery-related fires.

Fully charged? Time to unplug. ⚡🔥

🚨🔋 FEELS HOT? STOP USING IT.

Your device may be trying to tell you something.

Stop using a rechargeable device if you notice:

⚠️ Excessive heat
⚠️ Swelling or changes in shape
⚠️ A strange smell
⚠️ Leaking
⚠️ Smoke
⚠️ Popping or hissing sounds

These can be warning signs that a battery is damaged or failing.

Do not ignore the warning signs.

If a device begins smoking or catches fire, get everyone out, stay out, and call 911.

Your charging superpower isn't just knowing how to charge, it’s knowing when something isn't right. 🦸‍♂️🔥

🚲🛴🔋 BIG BATTERIES. BIGGER RESPONSIBILITY.

E-bikes, electric scooters, power tools, and other larger rechargeable devices use lithium-ion batteries that store a lot of energy.

🦸 Your charging superpower:
Whenever possible, charge these larger devices outside in a safe location.

And remember:

🔥 Keep charging areas clear of exits
🔥 Follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions
🔥 Use the correct charger
🔥 Never use a battery that appears damaged

A battery fire can grow quickly. Taking a few extra precautions while charging can make a BIG difference.

For tools and rides, charge outside. ⚡

The third quarter of 2026 kept our members busy, with 605 calls for service handled by Old Town Fire Rescue, and numerous other calls handled by our mutual aid partners when our resources were already committed to emergencies.

This is some of our Q3 data, along with the year-to-date tracking of our more complex calls for service. While many of our calls involve routine medical needs, our members have also responded to a significant number of higher-acuity emergencies requiring additional resources and specialized capabilities.

🛏️🔋 YOUR BED IS FOR SLEEPING, NOT CHARGING!

It’s tempting to plug your phone in and toss it on the bed while you sleep. But soft surfaces like beds, couches, pillows, and blankets can trap heat and restrict airflow around your device.

🦸 Your charging superpower:
CHARGE ON A HARD, FLAT SURFACE.

✔️ Desk
✔️ Table
✔️ Counter
✔️ Bare floor

❌ Not on your bed
❌ Not under a pillow
❌ Not buried beneath blankets

Devices and chargers produce heat during normal charging. Give that heat somewhere to go!

Soft surface? Hard pass. ⚡🔥

⚡🔌 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: CHARGE SMART!

That bargain charger might save you a few dollars, but is it worth the risk?

🦸 Your charging superpower:
Use the cord and charger that came with your device, or one specifically approved by the manufacturer.

The wrong charger can damage a battery and increase the risk of fire.

When it comes to charging your phone, laptop, tablet, or other rechargeable device:

✔️ Use the correct charger
✔️ Follow the manufacturer’s instructions
✔️ Choose products that are tested and listed by a recognized safety organization, such as UL, ETL, or CSA

Cheap charger? Don’t chance it.

Charge smart. Stay safe. 🔥⚡
