Happy ! October is designated as Squirrel Awareness Month, celebrating these quirky rodents and their ecological contributions. We appreciate our native squirrels for their resilience, acrobatic skills, gardening prowess, and delightfully silly personalities!

Today’s is Cutter. Happy Halloween – there’s nothing scarier than a squirrel with a knife! Cutter was designed by Nora Wilson-Wheeler, and sponsored by Alcas Corporation, now Cutco Cutlery. He’s become a hometown favorite!

“Cutter” as he has become known to Nora and her family, was an inspiration of the sponsors’ corporate segway. With the understanding of the sponsor’s image to represent common household usage, simplicity was a basic. Their new knife the “Santoku” was her choice to represent Cutco. Not only did it look good with Cutter, but she also liked the way it felt in her hands, not to mention the performance it actually obtains in reality. Everything falls together with the placement of the acorn at his feet. After all, what else would a squirrel need a knife for?

Today’s is Nutty O’ St. Nick. Nutty is a special one—he’s the Chamber’s squirrel!

The GOACC sponsored the original Nutty in 2008, to commemorate our biggest event of the year, the Santa Claus Lane Parade. The parade attracts traffic and draws community into the historic downtown every holiday season.

St. Nick was originally designed by artist Nora O’Harra of Ischua and unveiled in August 2008. He had holiday scenes of North Union and Lincoln Park on his bushy tail and was located outside the Chamber office on North Union.

An accident three years ago caused damage, meaning that Nutty had to be removed for rehabilitation. Local artist Eric Jones fixed him up, and Nutty now sits in Lincoln Park, where children drop off letters for Santa every year.

We know it’s not Christmas yet, but go visit Nutty today!
